The Dawg I'm watching over at the farm is like that. He'd show the burglars where the TV is, etc, etc... L_L But he is a pretty cool Dawg.
My dog loves everybody, but barks loudly at anyone he doesn't know. UPS & Fedex both know bring him a cookie and it's instant love. I consider him a early warning system we have firearms for the rest.
So whats your criteria for say 5 to 10 acres of property house no house doesn't matter. Hill top? Water? Whats your number one requirement? extra long driveway? Any particular state? Besides Japan? lol
Will stick to where am .... no government .... no taxes .... no political correctness .... no monumental levels of stupid .... no banks .... no lawyers .... Not to mention no desire to get molested by the t(errorist) s(tate) a(gency) - they dont even buy you flowers or dinner first ....
Up here no roads .... heavy jungle nearest village a full days hike through rugged terrain .... although with some the current ideas asean is kicking around into building trade routes through the region starting to look into places even more remote ...

Or even have the common courtesy of giving you a reach-a-round! fm522295c4 Bastadighes!
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
That gizzy with the shot shell is classified as a "spring trap" in all 50 states and will get you locked up. If you just HAVE to have one, you can make them out of a couple 3/4 pipe nipples, a coupler, a cap, a spring, and a striker. I'll not go into further detail on it here, though. Maybe a couple with flares instead of shotshells would give a decent warning.
If you want homemade deadly stuff, or even just stuff that makes a lot of hurt, it's fairly easily done. Some involve digging, and some involve a piece of wire and some springy wood. I'm thinking low tech here, rather than stuff that involves wire mesh and an electrical grid - the electrical grid goes down at the damndest times.
If you're looking to relocate, I've some ideas on what to look for. You'll want hills, woods, and at least a stream. I'll use my house as an example. It's built on a hillside, looking down on the approach.Stone foundation, second story overlook of the yard. Access to the house involves climbing the hill, right past the lookout point. Bottom of the hill is a stream going past, which keeps the banks too buggered up for vehicular access without driving across the bridge. the bridge is a choke point, and if push came to shove could be dropped, denying access. The stream, and the stream banks, would bar even a tank from crossing. Too deep, too soft. A natural tank trap, and if it will stop a tank, it'll stop a car or a pickup truck, too.
There is a reason that SWAT team couldn't get into the house to throw me on my face and wreak havok - and they made it all the way across the bridge, into the yard. We sorted all that out while I was still on the high ground - and in the shadows. Once they lost the element of surprise, it was all over but the negotiating.
Cameras are good, but they require electricity, so you need a backup generator for just in cases. My neighbor has a system that keeps just about everything covered, and my brother in law does, too - he has 12 cameras rigged into a single computer to monitor them. Got video of a bear poking around in his driveway last year with it. The thing about cameras is that you have to monitor them constantly. They do you no good if you don't see whatever it is you're watching for because you were snoozing.
If you're going to run non-lethal flares via tripwire, make sure they are (the flares themselves) above man-height, and aimed (and STAY aimed!) upwards... other wise, they have a potential to get kinda lethal... and might even set the wrong things on fire.
Maybe more later when I have a chance to think on it.
Guineas. Geese make good alarms, but Guinea fowl make GREAT alarms - matter of fact, that's the only reason I can think of to own a few. They aren't any good for anything else that I know of.
Thanks Nin didn't think of the bridge, these are great ideas and I don't have to kill anyone. d_hJZfC8t2FrknI9TjHM For me the idea is to be prepared and ready without any surprises, having the few extra early warning minutes. Then if the shoot'in starts I can do what is necessary.
There are all sorts of "choke points" that will restrict an opponent to just one coverable approach - bridges are not the only one. The thing is, you have to guess, and guess correctly, what sort of opposition you plan to face. For example, bridges and ground choke points and funnels would work against zombie hordes and the average looter gang, but they don't have choppers and drones, as a rule. For those, you need other defenses, the best of which is just not to allow them to see or target you.
Also, remember that if you have a really good choke point that restricts THEM to one approach, it also restricts YOU to that same approach - or exit. You have to plan accordingly for that. Most sieges fail for the defenders in the end for lack of proper supplies, or properly hidden exits in case withstanding a siege becomes untenable. Vercingetorix withstood the might of the Roman Army under Julius Caesar, for years by avoiding sieges, and destroying his own countryside in a scorched earth campaign to deny supplies to the enemy. It didn't fail until the siege of Alesia, when he stopped running and forted up.
Vercingetorix in Gaul and Spartacus in the home turf of Italy both ran running campaigns (as did Eric Rudolph and Lewis Redmond here in the Appalachians against Federals), and allowing themselves to be besieged was their downfall in both cases. The last stand locations of both had good covered exits, but they both just exfiltrated to weakest people to safety, and met their end on their own terms.
We know the end of Vercingetorix - five years after his capture, he was paraded through the streets of Rome and beheaded in a "victory celebration" by Caesar. the end of Spartacus is only assumed, as his body was never identified among the dead. Most assume that he was buried in secret by his escaping followers, but I like to think he lived and made it back to his homeland of Thrace, and died of old age there. There really isn't any evidence at all for which way it really went. The Romans had a vested interest in spreading the rumor to both citizen and slave that he was killed for his impertinence - I suspect that account, because of it's source and the political expediency involved... especially since they utterly failed to produce a body, or even just a head. I think he outwitted and outmaneuvered the Romans in the end and made it out alive. What he would have thought of that outcome is anyone's guess.
In the end, it's always best in my mind to keep 'em guessing, and looking over their shoulders forever - long past your actual expiration date.
