First, I want to say...I have no problem with ONE side of "GMO" and all GMO *IS NOT* equal. Thank college, once again, for that enlightenment.
GMO is a lumped collection of things for how it's referred to in the public and it runs from cross breeding (which has been a "GMO" happening for a couple thousand years now..and many of your favorite cat or dog breeds exist thanks to this..not to mention whole new breeds of cattle and others), and then there is true Genetic MODIFICATION.
I have absolutely no problem with cross breeding methods because nature still gets her say and the filters nature has built to see things turn out how they should are still, largely, intact. We aren't playing God or one up'ing even Him. THIS...isn't cross breeding. This is something much more.
(slaps forehead) Oh..What could POSSIBLY go wrong? I mean, it's not like this has never been done before with tinkering around insects to custom make the critters for our purposes. How are those Africanized honey bees working out? (Oh..heh..we're not supposed to think that, huh? ..and that was more the SAFE end of GMO than what they are doing HERE)

Anyone recall Jurassic Park? Nature DOES find a way to perpetuate...and I'd say that part, if perhaps one of the only parts, was likely dead on accurate to a scenario such a thing could see happen. In this case..it's a hell of a bet they're taking with a state full of American citizens ..that they know better than God himself, how these infinitely complex systems will adapt and evolve to the new lab modifications introduced.
Fine to say it works right now..but what of it after a few generations of fragmented material mixing into the gene pool of the species? They seem sure this can't happen ..but if I had a nickle for every BAD BAD thing that was prefaced with 'That can't happen..don't worry', I'd have Trump working for ME. :)

Never before have insects with modified DNA come so close to being set loose in a residential U.S. neighborhood.
"This is essentially using a mosquito as a drug to cure disease," said Michael Doyle, executive director of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, which is waiting to hear if the Food and Drug Administration will allow the experiment.

Enter Oxitec, a British biotech firm that patented a method of breeding Aedes aegypti with fragments of genes from the herpes simplex virus and E. coli bacteria as well as coral and cabbage. This synthetic DNA is commonly used in laboratory science and is thought to pose no significant risks to other animals, but it kills mosquito larvae.
