I have a question folks. It's a simple question, but I'd appreciate it if folks take a moment to consider it for a serious answer.
I'm not writing anything down to save here, but I certainly am making mental notes as I consider reverting the Fact CC web site back to it's old structure. The benefits to the change are a much faster and more responsive site in moving between pages and using content.
How important is it to people, in a site like mine or many similar ones that exist to index and display information of different sorts, to have a member login for the added personal features that brings? (anything from PM's to adding content through posts, to comments or other things). Is having a member account vs. just having everything that can be without individual login (the vast majority, to be realistic after all) that important?
Is being member based vs. no sign of a member system actually a turn off on an info type site like that? (Perhaps I'm concerned over a change that would actually be seen as improvement?)
...what I am doing here is getting a much better look at what takes resources and what doesn't in running a website. Using a CMS like Joomla has its place, and I'll use it on other projects. However, as I've come to find just HOW costly database cycles are in running 'site software' vs. just really good HTML pages, I'm finding myself wanting to pull clear away from any mySQL or database driven site structure unless a forum or other service is going to be a core part ..which it isn't on FCC.
Thanks for any feedback on how you see membership as a plus/negative from the user perspective?
I don't mind signing up for a service, kind of depends on what it has to offer. I hate surfing TOS as a guest, because they take a lot of functionality away.
Basically, it just comes down to yet another username/password to remember, and my browser automatically does that for me anyway. Just have a system where you stay logged in all of the time, even over the course of weeks/months. It annoys me to no end when a site that isn't particularly sensitive has a) ridiculous password requirements (I don't remember who it was, but there's a non-financial site I belong to that requires upper case, lower case, a number and a special character in your password, you have to change it every three months and you can't use a password you've used in the past… ridiculous!) b) a system that logs you out after some short period of inactivity.

@wrabbit2000,adjensen, I think membership builds community, have you done a page analysis and speed checked them? Were is the server location in comparison to members? Have they tested their internet speeds to the server? Is the server shared virtually, dedicated, etc. and its components? Are you caching pages so every page recall isn't a php to mysql call? HAve you tested pages with and without images? Are images preloaded or done on request? Maybe do a speed check with and without the RSS.
As far as membership not only does it build community, we as members have a responsibility in its content and creation. To be a part of something fairs much better than to come and go without commitment and ownership, I like that I am a plank owner, will be recognized as a writer, with over 300 post. It gets me nothing more than personal satisfaction, but I couldn't do that without, membership., and a sense of community.
The quickest thing to do to gain speed and reduce cycles would be caching. Then I would look at page load times with preload and no preload of images, with consideration in image size upload and display.
It is great you are being proactive, and if you were getting any pennies you would be worth every one of them.
These are pretty speedy. My personal page load times are milliseconds longer. I have a nice connection speed to my ISP Tested 34.5 mbps down and 6 mbps up to Los Angeles, and this is peek here in VA. Coast to coast baby...

Kind of depends if you are mining for info vs. becoming part of a group. Mining for info means you are sharing with a group. I do a lot of mining, just for my personal satisfaction. I become part of a group for the interaction, like I really interact much. LOL !
