China is pushing hard to become a world leader in medical innovation and technology. It seems this is a particular point of pride to them, and they're working hard on something for Ebola as well.
I suppose we'll see in due time how the Chinese versions of these things work out....but anything to help keep the spectre of Polio in it's historic place is welcome news to me.
SHANGHAI, Jan 15 (Reuters) - China has approved a new polio vaccine, the first of its kind to be produced in the country, a month after local authorities gave the green light for a home-grown Ebola vaccine amid Beijing's push to become a world leader in producing innovative drugs.
The development drew praise from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday who said the vaccine, which will be given to Chinese children as part of routine disease prevention, would help the global fight against the polio virus.
Of course, vaccines DO have their downsides...totally outside the debate of absolutes to 'must have vs. never ever use'.
China currently produces an oral vaccine to protect against polio, but it can in some cases cause people to develop the disease. The CFDA said it expected demand for the new vaccine to be in the tens of millions of doses each year.
Here is hoping this new one solves that annoying little side effect of the oral version they have. It would be SO wrong to get a vaccination for this beast....to then develop an illness that is better set in another time altogether. Yikes!
