A gunman opened fire Tuesday at the Veterans Affairs medical center in El Paso, Texas, killing one person, before shooting and killing himself, authorities said. Neither victim was identified.
"Everything is under control," Army Maj. Gen. Stephen Twitty, commanding general of Fort Bliss in El Paso, said at a news conference Tuesday night.
The clinic serves the El Paso area and Fort Bliss, home to the Army's 1st Armored Division. The fort was on lockdown for about an hour as authorities sought a person with a gun who they believed was acting alone.
The medical center said that it would be closed Tuesday and that all appointments would be rescheduled as soon as possible.
I am going to find other parts of the story off of better sites
This was due to happen because of the VA's treatment of Vets.. This one I will lay at the feet of the VA staff and base it on personal experience in dealing with them..
(CNN)One person died Tuesday when a gunman opened fire at the El Paso VA Health Care System in Texas, Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Twitty told reporters.
"The alleged shooter is dead, and we have one casualty. That casualty is deceased. All other VA patients and staff are safe. This is an active crime scene, and the shooting incident is under investigation," he said.
The FBI is taking the lead on the investigation.
The Department of Veterans Affairs released a statement saying it was saddened by what happened.
"We will continue to cooperate fully with military and civilian authorities at Beaumont Army Medical Center. The safety and continued care of our Veterans and the staff will be our focus throughout this situation," the statement read.
A Pentagon official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that a doctor was shot by a gunman, who later died from a self-inflicted wound.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear. The VA facility will be closed Wednesday.
A spokesman for the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, which is adjacent to the VA facility, had said earlier the area was on lockdown.
There ain't shit under control when you have incidents like this happening. Still. it's bound to happen sooner or later. Not all Vets are honorable and that's the truth. More than likely, we'll never know what drove this Vet over the edge.
There could be a multitude of reasons why he did this.
Or...maybe he was just afruitcake. Lord knows I ran into enough of those types while serving.
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
