Now the title is prickly, and I don't mean to suggest our nation has no values. Far from it, for it has values. It just doesn't hold them universally anymore. Whole segments of the population are almost at the point of fighting over just what that word means, and nowhere more than where authority meets people power, in the public square.
It sounds as though Kenya recently did as we had in the beginning, and after truly devastating violence for the public to absorb. They passed some rather draconian anti-terrorism laws. Unlike the US, Kenya seems to have wasted no time in reviewing those new laws vs their values, and their national set of them as much as anything.
One of the eight suspended clauses calls for three-year jail terms or fines of $56,000 for journalists whose reports are deemed to have undermined police investigations.
"We cannot limit the freedoms and inalienable rights in the pretext of fighting terrorism, which must be done in the confines of the law," said High Court Judge George Odunga.
It can be funny sometimes, how history and things work out. A nation which existed a good part of it's modern life as a colony to Britain and subjects to the Monarch in London would be where we could find a lesson I think our side may benefit a great deal from.
Limiting rights and freedoms on the pretext of fighting terrorism isn't fighting anything..but surrendering what was worth fighting for in the first place.
This makes me thgink of the term, "Having Standards". Obviously, not one Nation has them. Maybe if the US did, many would not mess with us and actively court us to become friendly with each other.
The others would be to scared to mess with us.
Maybe we need a Constitutional "Mission Statement"?
Hmmm...Thomas Jefferson comes to mind. “Commerce with all nations, alliance with none, should be our motto.”
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
Well, you all have to admit. America is one helluva great nation, if it weren't for all the Americans trying to lead it. Then again, I don't know how else it would have any real hope of working, but the system we have now. There is the catch-22. Change from within, as it has come as a generational effort (in a nation of ADD people now? not likely) or...what else?
If only we could find a single man out there with experience and ability to lead the nation. History has turned in GOOD directions as often as bad ones on that factor, at the right moment.
