I don't see a "General Chat" forum, so I'm posting this here.
I have 10 stray cats outside that are the product of one feral female that our tame male cat drug in here in 2010; he was a stray too.
Since that time, the female had several litters of kittens. I've been able to tame most of them and find them a home, or they were killed by neighbors dogs, over the years.
But, since Oct. 2013, she had more kittens that she wouldn't bring to the house until they were ready to wean. (She didn't like me picking up her past litters, so she moved the rest of the litters to the woods.) By that time, they were too big and too wild to catch.
Recently, those kittens (which are now cats) had kittens, and things are getting out of hand.
Believe me when I say I tried to catch that first female cat soon after she came here to take to the shelter, but she is too smart to go inside the trap. I gave the original male cat to a friend that would give him a good home, but the neighbors male cats started coming around, and...
Today I caught 4 of the feral cats that were born last Oct. of 2013 and took them to the shelter. The original mama cat wouldn't come near the food in the trap, so she is still here, along with 5 others. The four kittens I have left are tame, thank god! At least, they stand a chance of getting a good home.
But, even though the ones I took over were feral, I have grown attached to them, and taking them to their death sentence was one of the hardest things I've had to do lately.
I broke down at the shelter crying, and that made the lady at the desk start crying, and we just had a sob party. :'( She did her best to comfort me. She was very understanding.
I hope God will take these beautiful animals under his wings and forgive me. I just couldn't afford to have them spayed/neutered, and continue to feed all of them. slapforehead
I'm taking one the females that was born this past July, and another male that was born from "Mama's" first litter a couple of years ago, and getting them "fixed" Jan. 7th. I want to keep those two; they are beautiful.
The male is feral, but great at catching mice, and the female is tame and so beautiful; I couldn't let her go.
I also have two inside cats. One belongs to my daughter and the other is my baby. :) It's about all I can afford to care for them properly, but I think I can manage the other two to keep outside. At least, there won't be any more kittens after I "do the deed" to them.
I still have the three tame kittens born this past Oct. 2014, that I have to catch to take over Friday. I think I can leave them without having another breakdown, knowing they have a chance for adoption.
As for the original mama cat... she has avoided capture so far, so I doubt I'll be able to catch her, which means, more kittens in the future. Oh mylanta! fi52229f57
I just had to share this to get it "off my chest". Being such a cat lover, this will take it's toll on me for many days ahead.
