Yikes.... I wrote a very lengthy piece on this over at TOS, and don't have the energy to recreate that today. However, to summarize the whole thing? The Chinese are buying themselves a new Panama Canal without the annoyance of Panama to work with. They are building it to cross Nicaragua, not Panama....and our old friend Daniel Ortega is quite happy to let them have at it.
When I wrote about this at TOS, it was still in surveying stages, and some said it would never even move outside that. Other sources pointed to instabilities in China for why it was a pipe dream and nothing to be concerned with.
Well..whatever it is, it isn't purely fantasy anymore.
Indeed... 50 billion dollars for cost, and that doesn't surprise me. Anyone who has watched the movie "Basic" will recall the opening narrative of the history for the Panama Canal. It's an odd spot to have such a history, given it's entirely accurate, but there it is the next time someone picks it up to watch. It was a modern wonder though that, at one point, was killing SO many people that pickling the bodies and selling them around the world as medical cadavers was more successful than the canal work itself.
50 billion sounds reasonable for a cost ...and Nicaragua has a total Gross Domestic Product of just 11 billion. So...Welcome the Chinese to transoceanic commerce control when this is complete.

Who is HKND? Why..I'm glad you asked! I happen to have an answer handy. HKND Home Page
I hope they are kind about pricing when it is complete. By building it from scratch and in the world of modern shipping, unlike Panama, it can be made to handle the largest ships with ease, from the design phase. Panama is just about screwed beyond a given point for purely physical reasons.

RIO GRANDE, Nicaragua (AP) — As a conscripted soldier during the Contra War of the 1980s, Esteban Ruiz used to flee from battles because he didn't want to have to kill anyone. But now, as the 47-year-old farmer prepares to fight for his land, Ruiz insists, "I'm not going to run."
Ruiz's property on the banks of Nicaragua's Rio Grande sits in the path of a $50 billion transoceanic waterway set to break ground on Monday.
Nicaraguan officials will start building access roads on state-owned land as the first step in creating a canal expected to rival that of Panama — a project supporters say will directly employ 50,000 people and dramatically boost the country's GDP.

Talavera also rejected rumors that HKND will be allowed to run roughshod over property owners, promising that the Canal Commission will require the company to pay a fair price for land.
The canal, which is projected to be fully operational by 2019, also has plenty of backers among Nicaraguans.
