My youngest son is now 10 years old and had night terrors a few years ago but they had stopped. We were thankful that they ceased because it is really nerve-racking to see your child in that state while you as the parent cant do anything to prevent it.
Well they started again over the Christmas break. it happened 2 nights and one of them was quite intense to say the least...I will only describe that incidence as the other was a walk in the park in comparison.
It was the 29th, and we had just put the kids in bed (around 10h00pm) as we were heading for a trip out of town the next day for a new years party with close friends.
My wife and I had just gotten to bed and were dosing off to sleep when it started...
I could faintly hear crying from the end of the hallway so I thought one of them wasn't feeling well or something like that (they had eaten lots of junk that day so it was quite possible). I sat in bed...half asleep and was talking with my wife about it when the crying got much louder.... and closer...he was clearly walking down the hallway so I was sure he was going to be sick (the restroom is right across form our room).
By the time I reached my door he started screaming like crazy! Needless to says that I ran out of the room to go check on him...
He was leaning against the wall covering his face with his arms yelling NO!!! STOP!! and things like that. I was trying to get his attention by gently talking to him but in vain, it was like he was somewhere else completely. His eyes were wide open, but I don't think he could see me. He was mumbling all kinds of stuff I couldn't make out.
After a few minutes like that, I took his hand and started walking toward his room with him and he followed willingly. Then, as we got to his room, he froze in place and grabbed his stomach in pain screaming "IT HURTS STOP!!!" I immediately pulled his shirt off to check for any sign of injury....not a scratch.
It lasted on and on for a while and then just as I had gotten him to fall back asleep, he sat up in bed in a flash and yelled even louder "MOMMMMY!!!" So obviously my wife ran in to the rescue and took him in her arms to reassure him.
Then we really got freaked out. the Fright in his eyes was unlike anything I had ever seen, on anyone, ever...it really scared us!!
He was staring right through us yelling" Your going to hurt her don't do that!!! Your rip her wings off! MOMMY NOOOO!!!!" all that while in mommy's arms. He had no idea we were even there with him but he really did look awake.
Everything lasted about 45 minutes before we decided to really get him out of this state (we know it isn't good to wake him up in this state so we were trying not to, but after so long we felt it was necessary) I snapped my fingers and clapped my hands loudly next to his ears and he had no reaction. Then my wife just said him name really loudly and firmly! he immediately stopped screaming, and froze there.
He started looking around his room and was really confused and then he asked us why we were in his room so late. He was finally back with us and our hearts could start beating normally again. We simply told him he had a bad dream and that he could go back to sleep now. He leaned back on his pillow and went out like a light.
The next morning, he didn't even remember seeing us in the room....He even asked me why he went to bed with his shirt on and woke up without it...loll
It was quite the night I must say. It took us a few hour to fall asleep after all this...He did it again on the 31st but that time I got him back to sleep within a few minutes, he was just afraid of falling off something that time, and when I explained to him that he was in a safe place, he looked at me a bit confused, hugged me tightly, and went back to sleep on his own. This was so much easier to deal with.
Anyone else ever have a similar experience with night terrors? If so, please go ahead and share it here!
