"A series of powerful earthquakes jolted New Zealand's South Island Monday, triggering a tsunami and sending aftershocks across the country that left at least two dead, officials said.
The first event, a 7.8-magnitude quake, struck just after midnight Monday near the coastal community of Kaikoura, some 93 kilometers (55 miles) northeast of the city of Christchurch, the US Geological Survey reported.
It triggered waves of 2.49 meters (8 feet) above usual tide levels, the highest he has seen in his 38 years in New Zealand, Philip Duncan of Weather Watch New Zealand said. "
This is even strong than the 6.3 EQ in 2011 that killed 185 people and injured thousands.
The damage is pretty bad as you can see here:
I couldn't find more info yet on this but a dam also gave in...
"The Marlborough government emergency services Twitter account tweeted around 4 p.m. (11.00 p.m. ET), that a dam on the Clarence River had breached and a "large wall of water" was "heading downstream." Authorities urged residents to seek higher ground."
I just hope that the death toll stays low! be safe all in NZ!
I've been watching the EQ activity over there, and there aftershocks are more powerful than most major quakes are around the world. It's fortunate that so few people have been killed/injured.
I've been in two 6+ quakes, and I hope I don't ever have that experience again.
Oh no! I hope that there hasn't been much more for numbers hurt or killed. I have been away from TV or news access for most of the day and hadn't heard any updates so I hope that the numbers are still low.
