Dear AiRen,
This is not a criticism of your post. If anything, it's a thank you on behalf of all of the Hernandos and a defense of TOS. (I never thought I'd say that.)
We have three staff and 23 non-staff members. A ratio of one staff for every eight members. TOS will never be able to come near to that. There probably aren't many discussion sites that can.
The staff and members share a common philosophy and spirit of caring. I'm not unique, all the members here are wonderful people. We've gone through guohua's color changes (I'm still sea-sick from those diagonal stripes) and no one has said a harsh word about anything. (Although I'm beginning to think there's a lot to be said for black, gray, and white with little touches of color.)
Another difficulty TOS faces is that they're divided. Some have ego satisfaction as top priority, some base everything on money, some are normal decent people, There are many other motivators for them, but we're united.
No praise for me needed, it belongs to those who are willing to say "I like decent, humane behavior, and I'm willing to support it."
If you'll forgive me for indulging in a little bitterness, I wish someone would have answered my questions in 24 hours, or even 96 for that matter. I might still have been at TOS.
Anyway, thanks to you and everyone else, this place is coming along better than I ever expected.
I wish someone would have answered my questions in 24 hours, or even 96 for that matter. I might still have been at TOS.
That's what bothered me the most as well. Not that you made a possible mistake but there was nothing but deafening silence and then excommunication. Jeez even the inquisition told those who were burned at the stake what they did wrong.
Look at this as one of those surprise forks in the road of life, all in all personally I've had more fun here lately than at TOS. I still have my account there but who knows when that will be closed. Which is the problem with heavy handedness and lack of communication.
I've never observed ego as a near supreme or supreme priority to work out very well.
--It virtually always comes out of some serious degree of ATTACHMENT DISORDER . . .
--It virtually always is married to horrible degrees of immaturity, short-sightedness, pettiness, thin-skinned-ness, hot-headedness, petulance, smugness, haughtiness, self-righteousness, knee-jerk punitiveness, presumed 'omniscience' or near it; presumed or real brilliance but usually that is well hidden by thick layers of cluelessness; shocking amounts of fairly irrational arbitrariness; a shocking lack of personal insightfulness; etc.
--It virtually always bespeaks a deep inner sense of never quite measuring up or even worthlessness--usually from seriously inadequate fathering and greatly lacking quality and quantities of Daddy's love from a Dad who was a quality person to begin with.
--It virtually always !!!DEMANDS!!! that the world FORCE the individual to be HAPPY AT ALL TIMES; unoffended at all times; to win at all times etc. etc. . . . else they work hard to make those around them as miserable as they are.
--When manifested in men, it tends to be hair-trigger sensitive over any hint that their manhood may not be long enough; any perceived encroachment on THEIR turf; any hint of any question or challenge to THEIR AUTHORITY and/or any question or challenge regarding their competence.
--Also when manifested in men, it can be too often coupled with emotional, verbal &/or worse spousal and/or child abuse.
--Organizations ran by such folks tend to be hyper RULE ORIENTED vs PEOPLE ORIENTED. Given that website forums are inherently people focused, people supported, & people serviced businesses--that makes for a huge mismatch in management memes, policies, habits, tones, customs and culture vs what the people who are the customers most want, need and are most willing to contribute toward.
--The just above usually eventually results in a major exodus of the best, brightest, most authentically good-hearted, most creative, most contributive, most diligent, most responsible, most healthy members and writers on the websites.
--There's usually enough suck-ups who are similarly afflicted with such emotional/ psychodynamic dysfunctions that there's commonly enough warm bodies to keep the websites doing tolerably or at least limping along.
--However, it's also common that a smaller and smaller pie breaks into more and more hostile factions shredding each other and the website over who is REALLY SUFFICIENTLY KOSHER according to the latest RULES DOGMA SPEWING from Mt Olympus. And, of course, everyone is blaming everyone else as the root cause of it all.
I'm reminded of the classic religious joke that's far too true for comfort:
Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"
Northern Conservative†Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.
As to the issue of a massive site with a high per mod number of members.
I'm often chagrined by how poor this era's folks are at returning phone calls or texts. I was reared with a business phone also in the home and I was expected to catch it by the 3rd and definitely the 4th ring. And if there was a message on the machine, I or my parents did our best to return the call within 3-12 hours and certainly within 24.
I recall during my PhD program getting calls from counseling clients at all hours . . . I was persistently cheery--even out of a dead sleep. My wife was shocked that I could do that.
To me the people were that important--particularly hurting people.
To speak on that tangent a bit--many large websites seem to be almost totally insensitive to the fact that many, if not most, of their members are hurting on an average day--many quite a LOT. Admin seems to have the attitude--"our way or the highway--so what if they are suicidal. Not my problem."
I'm not made that way.
And that reminds me of the fact that one of the more horrid aspects of a divorce from a large site . . . one loses all hope of contacting again those who may have been SERIOUS DEGREES OF FAMILY for maybe 5-10 years or so. That's a HUGE LOSS and cause for a large amount of depression, I'd guess.
Anyway--again recalling my PhD program . . . we went 3 semesters a year. We were extremely busy doing our Dissertation and field placement work all at the same time as our coursework. We had some famous psychologists who retired to the area as our part time profs and it was intense.
Nevertheless, we all did amazingly well at getting back to people within less than 8-24 hours.
Personally, if a site is earning any money from ads . . . a chunk of that ought to go to CUSTOMER SERVICE of the highest order.
Treating folks in a harsh or calloused way . . . blaming them for problems . . . then ignoring them--is cheeky to the max; no small amount of mercenary and about as low class as a lobotomized drunken slug in the lowest cesspool of hell.
There are lots of ways to skin a cat in order to insure that one's members/customers are treated well.
A mercenary focus does not correlate well with treating customers well.
However, customers who are treated well tend to help insure that a business does well.
