The only thing I can think of is that Cruz' get out the vote campaign was as successful as Trump's. If so, might that be Cruz' experience telling him the importance of the ground game? Maybe Trump was a bit too arrogant? Trump tried presenting himself as a Christian but he failed as badly as Obama did, maybe Iowans are sensitive about religion?
Charles, thank you for the running commentary. I wasn't able to watch any politics tonight and was hoping that someone would have a post about what I missed and this was even better! I am really interested to see what the pundits will be saying tomorrow about all of it.
A joy and a pleasure. Anything for you. There is a bit more, if you can stand it.
CBS News tells us that Clinton now has 356 delegates and Sanders has seven. Clinton is 14.95% of the way to winning the nomination.
She won 696 precincts to Sanders 692. She won six precincts by coin flips because the voting was tied. (That's real luck.)
But I found the CBS exit poll to be especially interesting. 57% of the people at the Democratic caucuses were female. (Because Hillary is?) The men tended to vote for Sanders and the women for Hillary.
Hillary got the votes of the people 45 and older, Sanders got the younger ones.
As family income went up, people turned to Hillary.
New caucus goers tended to go for Sanders, but that might be connected to the fact that he was getting the young ones.
People who described themselves as Independents went for Sanders, those identifying as Democrats went for Hillary.
A third of the voters were married women and they broke almost 2-1 for Hillary.
But one that stood out for me was the question of whether the candidate should continue Obama's policies, be more liberal, or be less liberal. 55% said that continuing Obama's policies was the way to go, those people tended to vote for Hillary. Interestingly, the people who wanted policies which were more liberal, or less liberal, both tended to go for Sanders. That's a "What?!?" moment for me.
59% said they had made up there minds earlier than a month ago. They might not have been affected by any of the recent news on Hillary's E-mails.
Interesting. What are the 356 delegates for, the DNC nomination, right? This is the first of the votes/caucuses, so how does Clinton have so many delegates already to the 7 Sanders has when they are so close on their numbers tonight?
Polls show the nuber of people unhappy with obama and his narcassistic ways is high, yet they vote for hillary?? She is obama on steroids! Actually, her well-documented lack of empathy and disdain for all fellow humans might qualify her for rather strong psychopathic tendencies.
Psychopath:noun 1.a person with a psychopathic personality, which manifests as amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.
Come on,people; just a brief search of this womans' history shows she's not plum! This is de javu; the mass majority doesn't favor a candidate, yet they sweep to the top of the garbage pile! HOW does this happen?
I think what this proves is the importance of the religious turnout. Trump's arrogance, and fake religious convictions didn't prove successful as Cruz and his appearance to be genuine. Hopefully as clearer heads prevail, Cruz will continue in success not only because of his religious convictions but because of his constitutional convictions. One is a moral compass, the other a legal compass. Of course he could be a phoney as so many other politicians, but as far as that is concerned that is a given with anyone. I liked Trump over Cruz in the beginning but he seemed to go off the reservation with his arrogance. I have worked with rich arrogant people for almost 40 years, most completely detestable but quiet and reserved compared to Trump. It wares thin quickly, you aren't that special. Amazingly my pants are installed the same way. If I could tell Trump anything it would be how does it feel to be first loser?
Rubio The Dark Horse.
Hard working, great debater, quick on his feet, but a late starter. The establishment candidate which disqualifies him to me first and foremost. He is the republican preordained choice of the political power in Washington. Seems like a nice guy but no more status quo for me we need a sea change. He is a play it all to the end say what he thinks you want to hear, and tow the party line. He has the backing of the republican political machine, which is bad for the country, they need to pack it up and go home. Let the people decide who they want, not Fox News and the Republican political party. Fox News this morning is performing the Rubio after the sale, sale trying to resurrect something on the line of a Egyptian God. It is almost comical they are giving the 3rd place winner more air time than the front runners.
Ben Carson Whiner Extraordinaire
Already on Fox this morning whining Cruz supporters and management saying he is out and hope the votes go to Cruz. This is political game, if this is a problem for you think of the political pressure the Hillary camp could inflect. I liked Carson from the beginning but he really doesn't have the stones for it. He tried to be honest, a rarity and not political but his honesty came off as unprepared and ill informed, which is a shame but he doesn't strike as a person who would operate from a position of power. This is something we desperately need today, we need someone to stand up say this is the way it is, to our enemies, our friends, and the people. We need the real deal, no BS tell us like it is and stop sugar coating the problems of America. It's killing us. And when you done tell us your realistic way to fix it.
Bush, Christie, Fiorina, Paul..
Who??
Hillary Clinton Jail Bait
It seemed to me the media diatribe of top secret emails, legal problems, her arrogance rivaled only by Trump, her one time supporter is finally is catching up with her. Her speeches are a broken record and what she says lacks the infliction in her voice to be genuine. To me it is obvious there is no part of this woman that we will ever know as a person, and the public will only know her by her deeds, and those are a disaster. You and your husband can't give speeches for 200K to 500K and think people are going to think this to is innocent. A progressive Socialist government insider never to be said out loud.
Bernie Sanders Kamikaze Candidate
When Bernie Sanders announced he was a real Socialist my first thought was how many people came to his country to escape Socialism. Socialism being the transition point between Capitalism and Communism, and total control of industrial production, delivery and private property owed by the state. It is my hope he wins and Hillary is kicked to the curb. He will be easy to beat once the people understand what he stands for. Shockingly he hasn't crashed nor burned in his attempt to win the democratic nomination. In his speech he said 3.5 million went to his site to contribute money, and the average was $27.00 dollars or 94.5 million dollars. Wow his plane has grown wings and he has left the carrier, and if Hillary ends up as the jail bait she should be republicans will shoot him down like a Kamikaze with a blown motor.

DO DELEGATES HAVE TO SUPPORT THE CANDIDATE WHO WINS THEM?
Yes and no.
Unlike past years, Iowa's GOP rules require delegates to support the candidate who wins them, unless only one candidate is nominated at the convention. In that case, they can support the remaining candidate.
The Democrats have 712 superdelegates who can support any candidate, no matter whom voters choose in the primaries and caucuses. They are members of Congress and other elected officials, party leaders and members of the Democratic National Committee.
The AP is tracking superdelegate endorsements. So far, 362 have said they would support Hillary Clinton at the convention. Only eight have backed Sen. Bernie Sanders and two have said they would support O'Malley. DO REPUBLICANS ALSO HAVE SUPERDELEGATES?
Yes but not nearly as many as the Democrats have, and they are only in a handful of states.
In the past, many of the 168 members of the Republican National Committee (three for each state and U.S. territory) were free agents who could support the candidate of their choice.
But the RNC says a new rule adopted at the 2012 national convention requires states to bind their delegates based on the outcome of presidential primaries and caucuses.
Doesn't this qualify as 'cooking the books'? When a bunch of laywers are elected to run a country it stands to reason that the people are going to be lied to and swindled within the confines of the law.
I really don't get why such a big deal is made of the Iowa caucus. People seem to think that it ultimately predicts the outcome of the upcoming presidential race but that is far from true as Punxsutawney Phil has a better record of predicting whether or not there will be an early spring than the Iowa caucus has of predicting the next American president.

I would suggest like a horse race the gates just opened and it's the start. Cruz made it to the first pole before anyone else. Trump is on his tail, Rubio is following by a nose. The rest you ask... old and tired. 30 to 1 odds at best. The most exciting part of any horse race is the start and finish, everything in between is whipping, hanging on, and not falling off.
