The question is did they really not know or were they just interested in bigger tax money from new development? I would bet dollars to donuts that they knew all along because if taxes were increased from the new building they would have claimed historic value and stopped any permitting.
This would have never happened in my area they watch this sort of thing very closely. Of course Virginia being the birthplace of the nation has a little to with it but folks around here are very involved in the historic preservation of any early buildings. 5 minutes from the house here and you can have lunch or dinner in a tavern built in the 1700's. With the appropriate period food as well. To bad we don;t get to pay 1700 prices. It cost the wife and I $80 to $100 bucks for dinner in one of the taverns. It is a treat we don't do often.

"The demolition was put on hold after an anonymous source alerted the township’s Conservation and Preservation Committee to the building’s historical status. Unfortunately, about a third of the structure had already been destroyed by that point.
As unfortunate as this may be, the current state of the building is rather fitting considering the current state of our nation. Just as the James Bell Tavern is standing on its last leg, so too is our Bill of Rights, which the US Government violates on a regular basis. Perhaps the building should be left in this sorry state, to remind us all of how far our nation has fallen.
