This material, which is 100 times lighter than styrofoam, is known as a "microlattice". It was developed by scientists at HRL Laboratories in Malibu, California, which is co-owned by Boeing and General Motors.

I suppose that signals the end of "Heavy Metal?" (Sometimes I just crack myself up.) What I was impressed with were the articles comments on the structural strength of the stuff. They see it as going into airplanes and cars. Hmmm . . . I just had a thought. (That's what the "Hmmm" is supposed to signify, I need a lightbulb smiley.) Since they're microtubes filled with air, I wonder what happens if the material is heated or cooled. I'm sure they've thought it out, but if the air expanded very much the stuff could go off like popcorn. Of course, there isn't much air involved so maybe there's no effect.
