I would love to know the development budget google has for these self driving cars. It has to be millions of dollars, which begs the question is advertising really worth this kind of investment?
Reminds me of the old days when politicians had speakers playing our of the back of trucks asking for votes. It seems there won't be any place to hide from advertising, every web page anymore has a popup, and they are developing kitchen appliances with internet connected displays so they can market there as well. Of course recently it has been learned Samsung televisions have the ability to listen in the house to see what consumers are talking about so they know what to market. Lets not forget my all time favorite Nascar where paint is no long necessary just one huge sticker...

A patent received by Google this week sheds some light on the company's current thinking: electronic signage on the body of the car would be used to indicate the vehicle's current intentions, so - for example - someone would know it was safe to cross in front of it."

"As with Google's other patents for its self-driving car fleet, such as the one for external airbags, there's no guarantee that these displays will make it to the final road-ready vehicles, but it's a smart idea nevertheless.
The documentation supplied with the patent suggests the signs might be accompanied by loudspeakers blaring out alerts for the benefit of anyone nearby: if you're stood in the wrong place at a pedestrian crossing then the car will be able to put you right."
