The Real Reason For The 2nd Amendment

I am a gun owner who seldom if ever advertises that fact. I believe the gun debate needs to move as far away from the 2nd amendment as humanly possible. It is an antiquated and dated document that has no meaning to 2016 America by virtue of how this country has changed in regards to the original intent of the 2nd. The days of being realistically capable of having a citizens militia for the purpose of overthrowing a standing American military have long passed. If you don't know why:

In summary....roughly 2.2 million active personnel with access to hundreds of thousands of military grade weapons that are made, stored and shipped from 5 arsenals across the country.

In summary.......60,000 militia members at best with most weaponry obtained within the current laws and WELL REGULATED by the U.S. government in regards to how much weaponry can be owned. So I guess you could that,yes, we have a well regulated militia......regulated by the U.S. government.....NOT we the people. It's been an inside joke in the military for longer than you want to know.

First of all, if you like those odds, by all means, join a militia with the intent of fighting a standing army for the purpose of the government, who oversees all branches of the military, not being able to take away your freedoms.

Second, as far as the U.S. government and the U.S. military are concerned, the 2nd amendment doesn't exist. If it were recognized as being a valid and useful part of our culture, neither would have grown to the point where there is no realistic possibility of the average American having a fighting chance of overthrowing either or both. Yet they have.

Now, since I couldn't find any national stats I'll use Chicago to illustrate my next point. That being the fallacy that we need to protect ourselves from the police.

In the past 13 months, 563 people were killed by their fellow citizens in Chicago.

By comparison:

127 people were killed by police in that same city over the course of 8 years. BTW, Chicago is like Baltimore in that both cities have seen a sharp spike in shootings ever since both agencies started making fewer stops and responding to fewer calls. They back off and this is what happens. Still worried about your government taking your guns away? Don't be. If anything, they are slowly making regulations that are more on par with those they set for militia's, and that only comes with every public outcry after a baby gets shot in the face . What you should worry about is people killing each other. The numbers won't be as large as other cities, but nationwide that's pretty much the reality of the situation if taken on a per capita basis.

The reason I brought this part up is because the current numbers of militia vs. the military gives the military the obvious advantage. But if you put every adult gun owner into the numbers and the odds shift to our favor as far as ground confrontations are concerned. But when you look at the homicide rates across the country, you will also see that we are, for the most part, too divided against each other to be able to make a strong and united front against our government if the need arises. 



This is why I don't listen to arguments from either side of the fence regarding the legality and reasons behind of gun ownership. They're based on the 2nd amendment. I own a gun for personal protection (which may or may not have been purchased through legal channels), not because I believe in fairy tales. I'd like to believe I'm a little more down to earth than that.
