Beckie Bone Dunning spotted something rare and fascinating in the sky when she was visiting Ocho Rios, Jamaica, last week.
"I looked up and saw this ... never seen it before in my life. can u explain it," she wrote.
Senior meteorologist Nick Wiltgen from the Weather Channel explains what causes this to occur:
"In clouds, iridescence is a byproduct of sunlight being diffracted by water droplets or ice crystals, causing the various wavelengths of light – which we see as colors – to emerge at different angles," Wiltgen said. "As they reach the observer's eye, the observer perceives a pattern of various colors as those different wavelengths reach his or her eye from distinct directions, rather than being jumbled together and appearing whitish."
Wow! That's awesome! They have more pictures on the Source page, HERE
I've never seen such a predominant green in a rainbow before, and the blue is 'off' too, making me think this one is photoshopped. The link has some good pics that are obviously real, but this one leaves me a bit sceptical.
I got a few pictures of iridescent clouds in FL. What I saw wasn't as pronounced in color as this was, but they're still gorgeous. It'll take me a while (probably a long while...) to dig through my pictures on the computer to find them (not even sure of the year anymore or if they're on this HD) but I'll post 'em if I do find them
Edit: Found one! And damn, I've taken a ton of pictures over the years...This is from August of '12. Notice there's 2 cool atmospheric effects for the price of one going on
