I hate it. I hate it with a passion you’ll probably never understand. But you should, you should hate it too. And it scares me, scares the pants right off me. I’ve never felt this way before. Immigration? Islamic terrorists? Child abuse? Toxic chemicals in food? Fine, they’re not good, I’ll give you that, but they’re not all that important. Not compared to the outdoors.
Haven’t you ever even thought about it? It’s staring you right in the face and you go through life purring “Oooh, how pretty that is,” or “Look at those bright colors in the trees,” or “What a cute little bunny.” Really, what’s the matter with you? I know, I know, I’m supposed to be polite and not insult people, but you’re driving me nuts here. How slow can you be?
LOOK!!!!!!, how did everything get started? Garden of Eden, right? Everything was perfect, none of the animals attacked us, food was abundant without working for it, clothes were unnecessary, everything was the way God wanted it to be.
Then Satan arrived, > the universal symbol of evil. He brought us to sin, introduced us to rebellion and disobedience. We sinned, and got kicked out of the Garden and into the “Great Outdoors.” We are where we are because of evil. Do you think that our evil act gets rewarded with good? Of course not. We have gone from good surroundings to bad.
And how did we behave when we were out on our own? We started killing. We killed animals for food. We killed people for any number of reasons. We suffered, childbirth became a misery, we had to labor to eat, and we were afraid. But mostly we were afraid. Afraid of animals, afraid of other people, afraid of lightning, afraid of an eclipse, but always afraid. Our solution was to hide in caves, to get out of the “great outdoors.” We knew it was something to run from, not run towards.
As mankind developed, what happened? We became more and more interested in clothing to protect us from the outdoors. We abandoned the caves and built huts to protect us on all four sides. We knew then that nature was something we had to protect ourselves from. Are you starting to see??? Are you starting to understand? We run from nature, we withdraw from it’s vicious nature. Something inside of us tells us it is bad, it is evil, it is dangerous.
And now, we hide from the sun with sunglasses and window shades. We hide from the heat and the cold with air conditioning. We move from house to car to store to avoid the outside world. Our politicians encourage us to move closer to the city and away from the wild country.
And when we turn to the people who predict and describe the future, science fiction writers, how often do they tell us about cities in domes or underground completely away from the outside world? They know, their minds and imaginations tell them, where humans rightfully belong.
You have to see it, you have to understand. What can I do to show you the dangers of the outdoors?
OK, I’ve got it. It’s fall now, look at the leaves in the trees. Do you see their bright colors? Or, do you remember how they looked just a short time ago? You thought they were bright and beautiful and good, right? But you are fooling yourself, or have been fooled by others. You who like the red, the orange, and the yellow, don’t you know what you are seeing? Those trees are going into hibernation or in our terms, they are going into a coma!!! The trees are sick, they may recover in the spring or they may not. The color of the leaves in a healthy tree is green. What you are seeing is an end, a small death, yet it makes you happy.
I know we can’t eliminate the outdoors, but we can keep it for away from us, we can protect ourselves from it. Some brave men and women still go into the outdoors to take the things we need from it. We should honor those men and women and do everything we can to protect them and to keep them from having to go out in the future.
I know you are frightened just as I am. You can probably feel the panic and fear rising in you even now. Do not be afraid, but there are people working to save you from the dangers of the outdoors. In the meantime, consider medication and therapy until you have achieved a balance. It is working well for me, and I have hopes that it will work for you. Be strong, and tell everybody you meet.
Author's note: This is one of the hardest things I've written, and the most frightening for me. Nature is out there, it has some pluses and some minuses, just like everything else. Mostly, we see it as a good and beautiful thing. But, what does it look like to someone who has gone a little over the edge? People who are excessively devoted to an unusual belief (I won't say "crazy"), can make arguments which appear perfectly rational, and sometimes nearly convincing. What does the inside of such a person's head look like? People don't pay him much attention, so he resorts to stronger measures to get his point across in the text. "Stronger," in this case, meaning pretty well into the (OK, I'll say it) camp of crazies. I don't want to do this again. I feel like running away from the author. --Charles--
