"Nobody wants to know how a hot dog is made, because you always know there’s some crazy stuff inside. If you’re one of those persons, stop reading now. Alright, time for a reality check. According to the “The Hot Dog Report” released by Clear Food, a company on a mission to demystify the black box that’s the US food industry, many consumer brands add more ingredients in their sausages than you’d wished for, i.e. labeled.

The company sequenced the genetic material from 345 samples of hot dogs across 75 brands and found that around 15% were problematic. This means a deceiving label, whether exaggerating the protein content or finding pork in your chicken sausage. About 67% of the veggie samples had hygiene issues. Perhaps most disturbing is that 1 in 10 so-called veggie hot dogs had meat in them, and 2% of all samples had human DNA inside."

Thankfully I don't eat regular dogs just "Nathans" or occasional Hebrew National. If anyone tells me there is anything but the best shit in those hotdogs I will just put my fingers in my ears and say "la la la". Specially when they say hotdogs wrapped in bacon are the worst.. God just wouldn't do that to me.

"“It’s sort of the ultimate mystery meat,” says Clear Food co-founder Mahni Ghorashi motivating the company’s decision to start their first large scale report with hot dogs. As expected, Ghorashi and colleagues found a lot of problems with the hot dogs, which also account for a considerable market worth $2.5 billion in the US. Another $3 billion market makes up dinner and breakfast sausages."

Such a huge business and such a crappy product, we always wondered will wondering is over "THE REPORT IS OUT"

Well, we eat Vollwerths hot dogs, made in Hancock which is where I come from originally. Yooper dogs. Now since I know many of the people who work at Vollwerths, it is safe to say that I may be eating my friends. They are made mainly from beef with some pork to give some flavor. No chicken in their facility unless someone orders some KFC and some crumbs fall off the chicken. When I was there, it appeared that I was in a hospital, everyone was wearing what looked like lab coats, gloves, and special hats. So I am not afraid of their meats, they taste really good. The facility has it's own federal inspector there.

Now all the safeguards in the world will not keep bacteria out of a meat production plant. Bacteria and fungus are everywhere and most are harmless to us. Ninety percent of the cells in and on us are not our own and these symbiotic little microbes are our friends. I count on my microbes to help protect me. Stores are full of bacteria and fungus, they are everywhere on everything other than maybe garlic.

Some of the cheaper hot dogs make me uneasy in the stomach if I eat them for a few days. I don't know what they are putting in them or how much additives they have. Boiling a hot dog will help neutralize some of the sulfites and nitrates, converting them to a less harmful product as long as there is not too much of it. But most people do not boil the dogs, they stick them on the grill which can actually make them worse.

The strange thing is, hot dogs were designed to be boiled originally by the Germans. We strayed away from that. Natural casing weiners taste great if boiled.

You're absolutely right about natural casing sausages, whether they're call hot dogs, wieners, or brats. That's the way to go.

I am a little disturbed about the ten per cent finding in veggie "wieners." Personally, I think a veggie wiener is a blasphemy and a fraud from the start, sort of like sugar free, caffeine free, soda. However, I do know of a person who has been a vegetarian for nearly two decades, and any amount of meat really throws her digestive system for a loop. She should get what she expects.

Hasn't there been similar findings for foods labeled organic or hormone free or some of the other "Green" labels?

All right, I broke down and read the linked material. The site points out that:

While some of these substitutions, hygienic issues, other variances, or off-label ingredients may be permitted by the FDA,. . .

Apparently they're asking these processors to go beyond the federally established rules. If they're meeting federal rules, and Clear Food is unhappy, they should be going to Congress about it.

295 out of 345 had no problems at all, even by Clear Food standards.

Wait a minute, a thought just hit me, let me go get an ice pack. OK, what amount are we talking about? One part in elebenty bazillion? Or, half the dog? Clear Food points out that they examine food at the molecular level. Molecular? I don't care about a molecule of Arsenic in my hot dog, let alone whatever they're finding. (Yes, I know, there may be a bunch of molecules of something wrong with a sample, and there's probably no other way to test it other than pulling out a small sample with a pair of tweezers and seeing what they get, but still it kind of dilutes the impact of their statement.

Also, I'm not worried about the human DNA. People get cut in those processes, I expect there is a drop of blood here and there. I do, however, draw the line at entire fingernails. Clear Food found some human DNA in seven samples, five were in vegetarian products. (I was never going to eat them anyway.) So there was human DNA found in 2 of 324 non-vegetarian samples, that's less than two-thirds of one percent of the meat samples. What does that mean? Someone who had scrubbed out all of the equipment left a flake of skin behind? At the molecular level that would show up as human DNA contamination.

Even Clear Food says:

Despite the problems we found, what was most promising in our tests was the fact that there are a number of hot dog manufacturers, large and small, that are producing high-quality hot dogs with integrity.

And for those of you who are interested, and all of you in love with Hebrew National, which is most of us, they didn't win. They got an Honorable Mention along with Ball Park Angus Beef Franks costing $1.50 less per package. The winner? Oscar Meyer Premium Jumbo Beef Franks which cost a dollar less per package than Hebrew National.

How much credence do you place in the study now?

In any food product that has human hands involved in the production line there is going to be a small percentage of human DNA. Heck, ANY product where people are involved in the production line is going to contain the same. The only products you may find that do not contain trace amounts of human DNA are those whose manufacture and packaging occurs in a completely sealed and sterile environment and have absolutely no humans involved anywhere in the production process- including pre-production and packaging. Sneezes occur, fly away hair, sweat, dead skin cells floating in the air, etc. It doesn't mean anyone lost a finger in your hot dog or corn flakes.

Meatless hod dogs eh! To make my life simpler, I just call those Buns! :cheech:

Seriously though, As littled said, much of our foods are handled inapropriately and all kinds of stuff gets on there! There is NO way around this I think! Even if we were to make foods solely by machines, there is a risk of contaminants getting on the food!
