How would you like to spend a day to learn a century or two of history? Well...In another post, I'd mentioned the value of Youtube as an educational tool these days. That is still the stuff of scoffing by some, but some haven't spent time to see what may be there too.
I'm running these as background noise over the course of my day, and as I prepare for a history final this afternoon. It occurred to me though.....these little vids could be useful and informative to everyone! The historical basis is solid and factual (this resource was recommended by the heads of our History Dept. as a learning tool) and it's downright entertaining for the approach in some cases.
So, kick back with a day where you have nothing better to do and play the whole series as a background thing. You may just pick up a few things you didn't even know!
This is one of the more interesting and misunderstood periods of our American history. The video covers the period of reconstruction from the end of the Civil War to the 1870's.
The corruption, racism on an institutional level and outright power struggles between Congress and the US President who followed Lincoln were epic and defining to the nation that formed out of our civil war.
What is often misunderstood is how the politics and race of that worked out. Claims made today are sometimes impossible to see any reflection of for facts of the past. If you have about 13 minutes, this may be one of the more valuable in the entire set. This is also the period where direct and straight lines of events then can be drawn to events today. What came before the Civil War is nowhere near as clear to link that way...but the events starting with the end of the war were formative to everything that followed.
The video also covers the rather disastrous tenure of our 3rd worst U.S. President and one of the most corrupt racists to ever hold the office in our nation. Andrew Johnson. The first US president to have Congress override a Veto (more than once, too), and one to be impeached but not properly removed afterward. He had about as much chance of winning election on his own merit as Britain sending us war reparations for burning down our White House tho. President Grant is who followed the buffoon..but Johnson did enormous damage in his short time at bat.
