In the throes of a Second Coming of Christ–Delusion…and walking whenever and wherever moved……one afternoon, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Pele’s walk went farther north than usual, into an edge of town, where big, beautiful homes, estates and pastures abounded.
He entered in through the northern gate of a circling-drive community…of 1 to 3 acre plots of ground, each…that was about 15% filled…
…The northern end of the 'community' was virtually bare, except for roadways, drainage, sidewalks, utilities and Walmart bags…and
…at the very northern end of the northern end of the exclusive community, was a barbed-wire with wood post & cross(X)members fence, holding a group of five horses…in a pasture…with barns, corrals, etc…on the other side.
The fence was 300 feet or more from the end of the last 'sidewalk', through tall grass, cactus, mesquite, sagebrush…
Continuing toward the eastern end of the fence (being the farthest from where the horses were, when starting the trek), a young mare, with a younger colt began moving to where Pele’s course would likely meet the fenceline…and, waited, there - with the colt, playing, and the mare, neighing (or, snickering, or ‘?').
Pele was not well familiar with horse behavior, and began talking, while moving more slowly toward them.
The mare and colt leaned into the fence, encouraging Pele forward, and…after talking with, petting and stroking them for a few minutes, they turned back toward where they had been at the start…and Pele followed.
The mare seemed to have to acknowledge a senior (and larger) mare’s dominion, and then…while the senior mare began to address Pele, the young mare and colt tried to be party to the meeting, and the senior mare bared teeth and ran them off…and, the other 4 stayed back a bit further…while Pele spoke as earnestly as possible with the mare…and she asked to place one and a half knuckles of the middle fingers of his right hand between her teeth…
He was not in fear, but a bit unnerved, not knowing what permission was being sought or granted…
She first clinched, then, rolled the fingers, slightly, from side to side, then, held them firmly & sincerely for about 8 seconds…then let them free.
Pele found an old Wintergreen Lifesaver mint that had fallen through a hole in his winter-coat pocket…and offered it – she accepted – and backed away from the fence… And Pele walked out of the gated circular drive community…toward the next outdoor venture…enjoying Christmas lights and decorations across his 2nd Coming community.
