Russia isn't a friendly, happy pro-American nation. In fact, Putin probably prays to whatever he holds dear, for our Capitalist ruination. His SVR has sure been working on it for enough years, anyway.
Still... In Syria? They aren't our biggest problem. Assad isn't our biggest problem. Neither of them want to kill Americans in our own nation. ISIS is our problem.

I can just imagine the Russian Air Force leadership jumping up and down and blowing their stacks in frustration.
Umm.. They aren't totally ignorant buffoons.
If Russia wants to prop up THEIR OWN CLIENT STATE, I guess that is kind of up to them, and when did we get the title of God to hold dominion over all? Russia doesn't need our permission to fly to an allied nation of their own, for goodness sakes, OR build it up to be Little Moscow on the Med, should they do choose. Nothing much will have actually changed for regional balance, in that outcome, anyway.
Perhaps...just...MAYBE THO....they weren't hugging a cargo jet with Russian fighters to hide from US. Perhaps, and I'm just guessing here, they KNOW the US Air Force could spot a pigeon crapping in mid-air while making an estimate of its dietary balance from it.
MAYBE....*ISIS* wasn't that good, and MAYBE...Russia wanted ISIS to miscount, and .....heck..just spit balling again, but, Russia might just not be the show offs we've become to all but hand our complete order of battle to the enemy like discovery at a civil trial.
** I think I'll even understand if Putin is a little bent over this...after all, we've done it to Israel as well, for burning operations after the fact like it was ours to announce

A U.S. official told CNN Thursday that Russian fighter jets turned off their transponders as they flew into Syria in an apparent attempt to avoid detection. The official said the fighters flew very close to a transport plane that had its transponder on and functioning.
U.S. satellites rapidly saw that the aircraft were there, according to the official.
