Others may argue, and there is fair debate to be had...but I believe we are watching Russia do a fast and dirty build up to combat operations, and true Russian style combat operations, in Syria. The amount and types of equipment going in is telling, and they are securing an airfield, while bringing it up to standards for a proper base.

yeah, that is kinda what I was afraid of there. There is more tho (isn't there always?)

I think they mean to END the civil war, although it may well get much much bloodier for a short time, while that happens. Students of Russian battle doctrine in Chechnya and Afghanistan will be aware of how Russia fights in a way Americans can neither understand or match for viciousness and outright 'sweep and CLEAR' approach. They don't fight...they obliterate, and happen to take some casualties in the process. The 'moderate rebels' would be 'former rebels' pretty quick with some tanks and Hind gunships working them.

Okay, as a side note? It is just outright sad when a news organization like the BBC has to put the meaning in parenthesis for how completely Obama and his people are the ONLY ones calling these idiots "ISIL". The rest of the world shifted names when they renamed themselves. Stubborn on even semantics.
Anyway... I think Putin is looking for a sizable enemy the world can agree on hating, to thoroughly stomp. Like..say..ISIS (while helping their trading partner, Assad, at the same time).

The Russian military appears to be attempting to set up a forward operating base in western Syria, the U.S. government says, deepening concerns about Moscow's intentions in the war-torn nation.

Last Week: Kerry's warning to Lavrov
Last week, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to warn him that Moscow's reported troop buildup in Syria could intensify the vicious civil war there.

Sept 14: Russia sends artillery and tanks to Syria as part of continued military buildup
Russia has sent tanks and artillery to Syria amid a reported military buildup, US officials say, raising concerns about a potential mission to bolster President Bashar al-Assad’s embattled regime.
Moscow has sent artillery units and seven tanks to the Syrian airbase near Latakia on the Mediterranean coast as part of an ongoing military buildup, a US official told AFP on Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Today: Syria conflict: US presses Russia on military build-up
The state department statement said Mr Kerry warned that Russia's support for President Assad was "undermining our shared goal of fighting extremism if we do not also remain focused on finding a solution to the conflict in Syria via a genuine political transition".
"Secretary Kerry also reaffirmed the US commitment to fight ISIL (Islamic State) with a coalition of more than 60 countries, of which Assad could never be a credible member, and emphasised the US would welcome a constructive Russian role in counter-ISIL efforts."
