What is the definition of Irony?
So says Merriam-Webster. In one upstate New York town, it seems a man has found a living definition to which a Federal Judge agreed. There is no humor in this example though, just violation and the pursuit of justice in the wake of a profound abuse of authority.
The whole case stems from one ornery guy getting himself a traffic violation, and how he went about expressing his feelings about such a thing happening to him.
Following what I would imagine falls a wee short of literary masterpiece? He was introduced to the wonderful and magical world of....arrest, incarceration and a general education in what tyranny really is ..leading to more than just a little irony in the situation with that response. Entirely lost on the authority, of course.
In many examples these days? It may end there, too. Not for this man though, and good for him. He sat back and said to himself 'Well....we'll just see about THIS!' ..and off he apparently went, to a level ABOVE the local officials and their concept of their own power. The Feds trump all! (grin)

Yes folks, you read that right. One of the violators of this man's rights to freely express his low opinion of the worth of leadership in the community has been PERSONALLY held liable as a part of all this. I love it! I really do....
Just think.. If this man had been intimidated by the 'can't do nothin' cause we ain't nothin'' attitude we're all expected to accept and follow like sheep to slaughter....nothing WOULD have happened, and by not being challenged, the abuse of this man's rights would have been accepted by the town as another step in making the practice legal and proper.
Nothing changes, if nothing is challenged...so the moral of this story? Don't let stuff slide, and drive it home to those who need it driven there, when appropriate!
At least, that is one bunny's take on the matter.

It began with a speeding ticket given in upstate New York to a man whose response was, to put it mildly, less than polite. He sent back a payment form with a scribbled five-word expression of vulgarity, and crossed out the town’s name.
Instead of Liberty, the man wrote “Tyranny.”

Local authorities were not amused. They ordered the man, Willian M. Barboza, to return to Town Court, a long drive from his home in Connecticut. Mr. Barboza was summarily lectured by a judge, arrested and held for several hours on charges of aggravated harassment.

The judge got in touch with Robert L. Zangla, a prosecutor in the Sullivan County district attorney’s office, and asked him to investigate. Mr. Zangla’s office concluded that the conduct was illegal, the filing says.
Lawyers for the village and Mr. Zangla, who was also sued, argued that the officers had probable cause to make the arrest and that the suit’s First Amendment claims were without merit. Mr. Zangla has been found liable in Mr. Barboza’s claim.
