Ahh...California. The land of fruits, nuts and all that rolls left in our nation. They also lead the charge in the green push to look good in conserving energy. Toward that end......LAPD has a new set of cars to drive.
Perhaps, hard now to laugh a bit. Feel free to. I sure did. Oh...and no front plate is a violation in California, I might note. I'd hope the police didn't drive it there and break their own law?
Anyhow, they are off to a new start with a new mini-fleet!
Hmmm... So..to be or not to be...a police car? I can see the use of this little thing for meter maids. I can even see the use of it for crowd control or other events where size matters, but....I can't see the big boys and girls of the LAPD in clown cars. Sorry.. I just cannot see it. This must be a kick to the gonads of morale, at the very least.

That isn't a few vehicles. It really is a mini-fleet. The problem here is that this isn't likely a decision made because they want to do this, and that IS a problem. The state is mandating cuts and reforms with a 'you figure out how to do it', as well as mandates for more "alternative energy" . Now I use that in quotes for a reason. Quotes are what fits for it. Sadly. This is why:

The sight of a puny, electric-powered BMW police car with flashing red lights isn't exactly going to instill fear in the hearts of this city's criminals.
But on Friday, the Los Angeles Police Department showed off the newest member of its fleet, a black-and-white BMW i3, a diminutive electric car meant for tooling around downtowns, not necessary for a televised high-speed freeway chase.

The police department, along with fire, general services, and water and power, will lease a total of 160 electric vehicles. Two departments, general services and water and power, will also lease a total of 128 plug-in hybrids.

I believe electricity only sounds "alternative" until you ask....Where is the electricity coming from? Then? Well? What can you say? Alternative is a buzz word as often as not. Although, in this specific example, I wonder if the clown cars will pack the oomph to do more than just kinda buzz around?
