Good news for people & animals, albeit it took awhile
Not good news for Monsanto....too bad
The California Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it plans to label glyphosate — the most widely used herbicide and main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup — as a chemical "known to cause cancer." The World Health Organization's research arm also recently found that the chemical is probably carcinogenic to humans, and research has also linked glyphosate to the steep decline of monarch butterflies. And as we reported this week, scientists have increasingly raised new alarms about potential negative health impacts tied to Roundup, including a recent study suggesting that long-term exposure to tiny amounts of the chemical (thousands of times lower than what is allowed in drinking water in the US) could lead to liver and kidney problems.

GMO's alone are very controversial, whether or not they will have long term health effects on humans (and animals)
But what many people do not know, is that the GMO crops/seeds --a.k.a. 'Roundup Ready' -- have been modified to be resistant to Roundup herbicide, the weed killer
So those crops, both GMO and some non-GMO, are being sprayed continuously with Roundup that has glyphosate in it
And that ingredient alone is what is being labeled as a "possible carcinogen" ....meaning more than likely
The hidden ingredient in engineered food
The secret – what is not being discussed in the open – is that almost all engineered food crops and a good number of non-engineered food crops are routinely sprayed with a powerful antibiotic – glyphosate – that doubles as a popular herbicide. There is so much of it in bread and all processed foods that contain cereals, soy, corn, canola oil and sugar that, in 2013, the EPA had to raise the legal residue levels in all food and feed crops. And, of course, Health Canada follows their guidelines for MRL (Maximum Residue Limits). For example, soy can now contain 20 parts per million (ppm) and cereals (wheat, oat, barley) can contain 30 ppm. If you were a bread eater – someone who gulps half a loaf every day – imagine what your intake of glyphosate would be. And imagine the residues in dairy and meat products when animal feed can legally contain up to 100 ppm.
There are many areas in the US and Canada where RoundUp® Ready crops are grown and where 75% of water and air samples contains traces of glyphosate. The EPA’s MRL for glyphosate in drinking water is below 0.7 ppm. Above that, the EPA warns you will become severely ill, quickly. The MRL in Europe is considerably less.

Almost all agricultural chemicals of concern are measured every year and kept in check, except for glyphosate, which is regarded as completely harmless since its first registration as an herbicide 40 years ago.
Therefore, the government saw no need to monitor its use and residue levels in food and water.........until now
With the recent classification by the World Health Organization (WHO) that glyphosate is a “probable carcinogen” should help raise awareness of it's harmful potential in humans, and prompt further studies
Another Important Threat Posed by GMO Food
Glyphosate residues remain in and on the crops on which they are used and represent a threat to human health. This report contains the complete list of glyphosate tolerances for residues in food crops in the U.S., as of September 18, 2013.
In addition, the report clearly describes the mechanisms by which this happens, showing how residual glyphosate:
-Changes the composition of gut bacteria
-Compromises our ability to detoxify toxins
-Impairs the function of vitamin D
-Depletes iron, cobalt, molybdenum and copper
-Impairs the synthesis of tryptophan and tyrosine (important amino acids in protein and neurotransmitter production)
The authors conclude their comprehensive report stating: “The monitoring of glyphosate levels in food and in human urine and blood has been inadequate. The common practice of desiccation and/or ripening with glyphosate right before the harvest ensures that glyphosate residues are present in our food supply. It is plausible that the recent sharp increase of kidney failure in agricultural workers is tied to glyphosate exposure. We urge governments globally to reexamine their policy towards glyphosate and to introduce new legislation that would restrict its usage.”

Evidence Mounts that Roundup Is Toxic
Scientists report worrisome changes to liver and kidney genes in rats, adding to evidence that glyphosate, which is widely used around the world thanks to Monsanto and their Roundup product, is toxic to humans as well as animals, contaminating our food, water and soil
Long-term exposure to tiny amounts of Roundup — thousands of times lower than what is permitted in US drinking water — may lead to serious problems in the liver and kidneys, according to a new study. The new study looked at the function of genes in these organs and bolsters a controversial 2012 study that found that rats exposed to small amounts of the herbicide Roundup in their drinking water had liver and kidney damage.
The new study is the first to examine the impacts of chronic, low exposure of Roundup on genes in livers and kidneys and suggests another potential health impact for people and animals from the widely used weed killer. "Given even very low levels of exposure, Roundup can potentially result in organ damage when it comes to liver and kidney function," said senior author Michael Antoniou, head of the Gene Expression and Therapy Group at King's College London. "The severity we don't know, but our data say there will be harm given enough time."

One thing is for sure....the EPA and USDA need to revisit policies on glyphosate and genetically modified crops designed to withstand it
Instead of "taking the word" of Monsanto Company that it is 'safe'
All they care about is the almighty dollar, not what their product may do to peoples health over time
Monsanto pays their lobbyist well
