The Chinese go to Alaska...with 5 warships, complete with a fleet resupply vessel! A nice little package to show a small projection of force and intent to use it.
Yup... That be five, and that be a first time thing, at least since the Chinese Treasure/Exploration fleets of historic reference.
Now that seems fairly straight forward and simple to explain it, right? A show of force, freedom of navigation and 'screw you' exercise. Much like the US Navy does in places, and for the same reason. It is generally to demonstrate to the nation being targeted for attention that they can't do anything about it, no matter the class, type or intent of the vessels that choose to hug a shoreline.
Of course, to our illustrious leaders...this is too difficult a concept to get.

I wonder if Obama even appreciates the fact that Chinese thinking is, historically, VERY deliberate and VERY meaningful. I.E...The fact Obama is in Alaska, and a distant corner of his 'empire' is likely no coincidence to the arrival of Chinese warships in waters they've never been before and being generally obnoxious and mysterious.
