Nugget, dirkgently, and 8 more like this

My wife and I have decided that enough-is-enough and after counting
the pennies, checking that we have the attire that old people wear,
and learning how to smell of urine, we took the plunge and retired.
So as we settled down and pondered our next moves, my better-half
took to her hobby that has eluded her all her working-life.
She began to delve into historical accounts on subjects that interested
her and took-up a membership at the local library.
All very exciting -I hear you say as you ponder on where flying saucers
and gateways to other universes will fit into this story, but I'm afraid
that I cannot bring such vivid facets to this thread!
It's just something that has been happening since she joined the
bookworm-shop, something that even the resident of my shed cannot
fathom.
Around 90% of the books that she's borrowed from the library have
their individual page 50's marked with a circle around the number in
the top-left hand corner!
If the number is on the bottom of the page, the number 50 is left
unmarked.
With my wife having a penchant for the dark-side of non-fiction, the
themes where this graffiti occurs tends to be found in all of the books
she has read regarding the will to accomplish through any means, even
if violence is required.
Examples:
A 'Jack The Ripper' book that lists the murders and possible suspects.
Page 50 circled.
A book about how Dr. Crippen was captured and the reference to using
the telegraph-system to outrun Crippen's fleeing to New York.
Page 50 circled.
Eygptian history, revealing palace intrigue, logical explanations of
hiding Pharoah's bodies and tentative opinions of why astronomy was
important in their religion.
Page 50 circled.
John Lee, The Man They Couldn't Hang. The title says it all!
Page 50 circled.
Many tomes on Roman history. Accounts of an empire that ruled the
known world with a mature hand, alongside the failings due to avarice,
power-hunger and inbreeding.
Page 50 circled.
Books on John Dillinger, the Mafia and other criminals that gained
notoriety throughout history.
Page 50 circled.
John George Haigh -The Acid Bath Murderer... (Oh Lordy, I'm married
to Morticia from The Addams Family!)
Page 50 circled.
So you see, even though there's a 'flavour' running through the books
and with society being exposed to these types of behaviors through the
everyday media -these sorts of books may-well be read by people of many
different walks of life.
So what do you think...? Why would someone draw a ring around the
same number on a page, but only if it's displayed in the top-left hand
corner?
Oh, by the way... if a chapter begins on Page 50 and no number is
shown in the corner...? Yep, you guessed it, our mystery-ringmaster
draws a small circle!
Me-thinks the possible answers will be interesting!
