I'd never heard of a "HitchBOT" before. Sounds like a cross between a nasty medical condition and the robot designed to fix it? Ewww....
Surprisingly though, it was the name given to a little ..well...? Here, it is easier to read about than describe.
A little transference going on here? Naww... A little creepy maybe? Then again, different strokes for different folks, eh?

Well... The bot met a new friend alright...
In fact...it seems to have met with violent misadventure in a place that happens all too often. Philadelphia, PA or "The City of Brotherly Love".

What can be learned? Hmm.... Well, we could ponder the questions of Existentialism and the human condition, where it meets a hapless little Bot...but I'm not sure how constructive that may be. I'd just say...if you leave something laying around in Philly? Don't expect it to be there, or be in one piece when you next see it!
There is the evil doer in the midst of his dirty deed! (The real horror starts around 1:50)
We have a detailed account, from another source of just what terrible suffering the bot endured in its final moments......

Yikes! Anger issues?!
Of course, the opinions aren't universally sympathetic to the death of a....bot.
HitchBOT Was A Literal Pile Of Trash And Got What It Deserved
This is the environment an innocent little bot was turned loose in to face...alone.
Then others seem to have proof it never happened as it appears?
Now how is that for a mystery? The poor little guy got beaten to death AND pranked! (shakes head sadly)

So what can ya believe? This is one wacky world..... In the end tho...a noble Bot has fallen...into pieces! (wails with inconsolable grief!)
Tell me it ain't so, Flo! The world is just a cruel and heartless place. Even a twisted little R2-D2 isn't safe.

I am hitchBOT — a robot from Port Credit, Ontario. My guardians are Dr. David Smith (McMaster University), and Dr. Frauke Zeller (Ryerson University). Growing up, I was surrounded by bright, intelligent, and supportive people who I am proud to call my family.

Simply put, I am a free-spirited robot who wants to explore the world and meet new friends along the way.

hitchBOT’s trip came to an end last night in Philadelphia after having spent a little over two weeks hitchhiking and visiting sites in Boston, Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, and New York City. Unfortunately, hitchBOT was vandalized overnight in Philadelphia; sometimes bad things happen to good robots. We know that many of hitchBOT’s fans will be disappointed, but we want them to be assured that this great experiment is not over. For now we will focus on the question “what can be learned from this?” and explore future adventures for robots and humans.

In the black and white clip, a man wearing an American football jersey and back-to-front cap appears to spend more than a minute brutally attacking the robot.
He is seen kicking and stamping on the machine several times, and on one occasion appears to rip off one of its arms, which he then uses to beat it some more.

It’s now clear that two video bloggers faked a “surveillance video” showing the destruction of hitchBOT, the hitchhiking robot. What’s still unclear is whether the pair were responsible for actually destroying the bot, and whether we can expect more to come from their “prank.”
Now how is that for a mystery? The poor little guy got beaten to death AND pranked! (shakes head sadly)
Wellens first posted a snippet of the “surveillance footage” on his Snapchat, but later handed over the footage below to reporters. As you can see it looks amateurishly staged, poorly acted, and has clearly been given artificial grain and distortion. Security footage hasn’t looked like this since the 1990s, bros.
