Well, so much for all that peace talk horse puckey. The Taliban don't want peace. They never have, never will and can never settle for that. They are the forerunner and nice version of ISIS, in terms of being 100% uncompromising and fanatic about being a special flavor of Muslim. A flavor all their own, really.....but compromise ain't part of the Quranic studies they force-feed like a psychological experiment gone berserk.
They leave no room for debating their feelings on it too, and I DO have to give that much to them. Playing games about where one stands with them isn't among their flaws.
...and people thought Obammy ended the war? Oh ho ho no. He just gave Americans an X-Mas present to say the (OUR) war ended...and forgot to explain that whole 'the war isn't slowing down, but accelerating' part. Hell, it wasn't against us tho, right? So victory it was, as we so declared it. Kinda...
The Taliban sure didn't get the Memo. Budget cuts on telegram service perhaps??
Well, yee-haw and kiss my fuzzy tail, but can someone explain to me what the heck the years of war were all for??? We didn't make a thing off resources, and paid out the butt by orders of magnitude to hurt for every DROP of fuel, anywhere in that sandbox. Opium? Okay... I'll bite..but who benefited, and what was so special about Afghanistan to make that a primary cause and not just opportunistic weasels being opportunistic as they always are??
Seriously.. What gain has there been, in even corrupt or underhanded ways? Okay okay...outside defense contractors. They boomed like the 2nd Coming over the past 15 years. That is true...at what price?

There are still thousands of Americans, and many in uniform, left behind in what is falling apart there. I know it won't happen, just like it didn't for Yemen and I recall saying the same thing shortly before it went to hell there...but our Government needs to get our people out. All of them. Now...and not after the borders close to a full Taliban control, and we're negotiating the release of a number which makes Carters humiliation in Iran look like a minor miscalculation.
I sometimes wonder if some of our leaders won't be happy until the United States HAS seen a position totally overrun and destroyed, for what I think would be the first time since Vietnam, wouldn't it (or has a combat position been totally overrun somewhere since?).
They ended the Soviet presence through sheer terrorizing ....and you older folk here? Think back, and if you think hard? You may recall one of the threats the Taliban made under 'ol Omar before they were stomped clear into Pakistan in 2002. They said by the end, they had the Soviets scared to leave their own wire for fear of ambush and things exploding under, around and above them....not to mention...what I guess was done as near sport to any Soviet they could get alive. Not pretty.... They said we'd end the same way.
I do recall hearing that in late 2001, and almost laughing at the audacity of those pipsqueak little desert nomads to suggest they could bottle up and contain United States forces in such a pathetic way.
......but how often, how heavily supported and armed, and how high risk is it for U.S. forces to leave secured compounds now and cross into open country around Afghanistan? Is it done as needed..or as absolutely required for the risk to our people?
....damned if I have to ask. Who DID win ..or more to the point..who lost here? ..and was anything gained, by even the odd standards of warfare?

KABUL, Afghanistan – The new leader of the Afghan Taliban vowed to continue his group's bloody, nearly 14-year insurgency in an audio message released Saturday, urging his fighters to remain unified after the death of their longtime leader.

"We should keep our unity, we must be united, our enemy will be happy in our separation," Mansoor purportedly said in the message. "This is a big responsibility for us. This is not the work of one, two or three people. This is all our responsibility to carry on jihad until we establish the Islamic state."

Mansoor has effectively been commanding the Taliban as Mullah Omar's deputy for the last three years, and has called on loyal commanders to intensify the war against the Afghan government in recent months. Local security forces increasingly find themselves under attack as NATO and U.S. troops ended their combat mission in the country at the end of last year.
