Okay, first, let me say the Los Angeles Unified School District was one of the single most corrupt and dirty institutional organizations I've EVER had contact with, on any level, whatsoever. They don't QUITE take the cake (the IRS holds that one for all time, I think) but they are a real close runner up in my memory. Now its been a good number of years since I lived in the "Golden State", let alone had any contact with the LAUSD. I still have family out in L.A. and the San Fernando Valley tho, and so, I know from them that not a whole lot has changed.
With that in mind....Here is the latest in the epic of corruption in a district that could be a poster example for it.
The FBI comes calling!
I'll just bet they were a tad surprised. Schools fancy themselves as somewhere above God...as even God needed taught by someone, they'd argue. (Perhaps a little drama there..but NOT that much in my experience). In this case? They outdid themselves with ignorance and bad ideas.
You see, the past Superintendent, recently resigning under a cloud it seems, believed access to technology is a CIVIL RIGHT! (Oh brother...where in the heck do these people find their modified Constitutions, anyway?!). In fact...He believed it so strongly, he blew 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS of public bond money set aside for things OTHER than horrible pet projects like this.
Oh.. the students loved it... (rolls eyes)
Do these idiots not have children? Should we make it a LEGAL requirement to have children before being permitted to hold any management level position in any school structure? Perhaps so...because for them to not foresee their filter going the way of the Do-Do bird, and likely by the end of the first week, is the type of stinkn' thinkn' which comes from people who "know" a topic by reading...but KNOW almost nothing about it in real life. Like...handling children.

Then again, I could be over thinking a lot of the idiocy when it may really have just come down to something more basic. Good, old fashioned, tried and true public corruption of officials. In this case? Corrupt school officials milking the last dollars from a struggling district to pad pockets and get new gizmos.
Resignation? Oh..he got off easy for ripping the kids off by over a billion dollars, IMO.

As this is something I am seeing both in local schools and in college myself, I have to add something at the end here.
This isn't JUST a district ripped off for a mind numbing sum of money through corruption. If only it were just that....
This was a school year, now in chaos by a district wide roll out that utterly failed, but reached into all corners and levels of the academic program. That means...THE KIDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS LOST PART OF THEIR EDUCATION ! ! !
This is a school year they couldn't get BACK for what has been lost to DUMB, without failing..and U.S. schools flat out DO NOT fail people in grade school. If not by policy, then by practice as the norm. So...every child who was in a class that lost instruction time, lost valuable pieces of education for the grade they are in. This Superintendent claimed to want to help...but very seriously did damage to every child trusted to his lack of leadership.
I pity the ones where that arrived during critical junctures in math, history, science or other areas where missing a little can mean A LOT...depending on WHICH little part that happened to be.

The FBI visit surprised school officials, according to L.A. schools Supt. Ramon C. Cortines.
"They stopped by late yesterday afternoon," Cortines said Tuesday. "I found out at 4:30 in the afternoon on Monday." Cortines said he then alerted the district's general counsel to notify the Board of Education.

Deasy readily acknowledged that the project was an expensive draw from bond funds. But he said there was no other way to pay for what he called a civil rights imperative — to provide low-income students equal access to technology in the nation's second-largest school system.

Students deleted a security filter so they could freely browse the Internet; many teachers felt poorly prepared to use the devices. Within months, the board decided to move more slowly, while also trying out other devices and curricula.

Deasy suspended purchases under the contract after disclosures that he and his top deputy had especially close ties to executives of Apple, maker of the iPad, and Pearson, the company providing the curriculum on the devices.
