It is important to clarify that title a tad, to note it is excessive soda drinking they are talking about. Having a soda now and then, or a coke over a meal isn't what they mean at all. However, up to now, weight was thought to be a critical combined factor. This seems to suggest weight may not be as strong a factor, or a major factor at all when it comes to sugar water.
This is actually important and a bit disturbing, IMO. I see people on campus all the time, drinking soda like its water and presumably thinking their skinny frame makes that okay without serious prices to be paid later. That may not be true, apparently.
Ouch! That is a tough reality for such a change in thinking on this. For those who would appreciate a quickie reminder on what Type II is, or II vs I?

Type 1 is what you are born with, and is a far more serious but simpler condition for its causes and treatments. Type II is what you create by bad choices (Myself among them..so no pointing fingers on this one, to be sure!).
Now this source may not be familiar to everyone, and I absolutely hate their widget to highlight every other word to link to a definition. However, I found the link to their source on Page 2, for those who may want to learn more and verify the validity of the results.

So, have a soda! ....just don't have a six pack in one day.
Whether you are slim or obese, if you drink lots of sugary soda or other sweetened drinks you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, a new analysis reveals.

If this is correct, sugary drinks could lead to 2 million new cases of type 2 diabetes in the United States between 2010 and 2020, the researchers reported in the July 22 online edition of the BMJ.

Type 2 diabetes disrupts the way your body converts sugar from food into fuel, and it causes serious problems if left untreated. About 29 million Americans have diabetes, most of them type 2, the American Diabetes Association says. Many are undiagnosed.
