Okay, so... the creative commons license that is what most stock photograph's are under, for those wanting to use their photography for free..(this includes all uses of their photographs)
As a part of this license, the user (who is using the free photograph in an array of forms) is agreeing to basically advertise the photographer by posting a link to the photographer along with the photograph (used however you happened to have used it)
For someone who does photo-manipulation work, there are often many photographs used in order to create one work. A recent piece I did included 14 photo's that were not my own. If I were to personally post that photograph, I would personally have to provide 14 links along with the photo, or the names of 14 photographers on the photo itself. (Either one, most want the actual links along with my work if it is posted on the internet)
When I download their photography and use it for free, I personally agree that I (personally) will do this and so they allow me to use their work free. This is basically giving them free advertising...
If YOU, who is not the one who makes this agreement, want to post someone's photo-manipulation piece (or even other free stock photo's) then a link to the work you are posting is all you have to do - NOT the wide array of links the manipulation artist has listed, because you did not make the agreement.
Does this make sense?
Example:
You found a cool image on the internet and you post the image
Then you link the image:
opinionatedb.deviantart.com/art/Have-You-Ever-Seen-a-Rainbow-538327067
And you are done.. you have done all you need to do..
only I need to add more to it, because I created the piece and made agreements

So, to recap - if you purchase an image you do not have to provide a link to it, but if you use an image for free then you must provide a link - and that is ONLY to the image you are using.
..and that is what the creative commons license is.
