That would scare me senseless. We have had some vicious storms here lately and I would have been positive that another was about to form and touch down. Just the 22nd, I think, there was an F2 tornado that ripped through the campground that my parents have a lot at. Luckily they are in the process of selling it and were in Wisconsin that week, but the storm touched down in the section that their lot is in. It destroyed almost all of the section and once pictures started coming out from people who were there and the reporters who got to go in before lot owners, it looked really bad.
My parents went in as soon as allowed to check their lot and they said that it was far worse than the pictures could show. That whole section was practically gone. Their lot was one of the few that was mostly okay-ish. The lots on either side of them were entirely destroyed and the trailers not much more than kindling. My parents said that they pulled into their lot and saw that they lost one of the 3 sheds and that the air conditioner unit on top of the trailer was bent up a bit. That was it. Mostly it was downed trees and damage to nature. Their little round deck table, which isn't all that heavy, was even in the same place they left it. They didn't get to stay long, but we are all going out again this Saturday to see what needs to be done to start clearing. No work was being allowed yet last weekend, just taking pictures for insurance, but work can happen this weekend. They said that the one shed that was flipped looked like it landed on top of a pile of brush and said that it didn't look like it was crushed or damaged and might be fine once they get it out.
I have no idea how that happened when every single thing around them was utterly destroyed, but it was the one spot on their cul-de-sac that wasn't damaged too much.
Pictures like this make me worry about storms like the one we are going out this weekend to clean up from.
I used to sail in some pretty bad weather (the windy-er it was the better for me) anyway one day as I looked up there were three high altitude funnel clouds hanging out the bottom of a very dark cloud that was providing some shade and exciting wind gust.. They never touched down upon the water but I decided right then, night time sailing, unless clear, weather was a big no no for me. The darn ocean will kill you faster than just about anything IMO...
You have to respect the old sailing ship days and the hardships they went through to get to just about anyplace..
I saw something similar to that in my first year of driving a truck. I was cruising on I-70 late one night, just approaching the Colorado border and it was a stormy night..but I was young, dumb and full of...nothing intelligent. lol.... I didn't understand the importance of a weather radio on during nights like that yet.
Anyway, I'd heard warnings on the regular radio for tornadoes in West Kansas but didn't know quite where...and people who know that part of the nation know you can see as far as the curve of the earth permits for how little there is to obstruct it. It was dark..but lightning solved that.
Lightning flash BEHIND the funnel cloud and looked like the finger of God to a new trucker with no good sense yet. The thing about seeing something in a flash, especially when it towers over you from a distance ..is you don't see direction. Damn if I was thinking straight to look that hard after the shock anyway..and it must have still been 15-20 miles away to think back now.
The radio said it crossed I-70 behind me by several minutes. It's amazing we survive some of the most important lessons in life, eh?
* FTR..I think it was like an F-2 or something. I'm not even sure it would have flipped the truck short of a direct broadside into it....but at the time? Damn..that was a giant F-5!!
