The beach is a lot like the forest in that it's a type of wilderness, humans are not the top dog there by any means.
Here are some tips to help you keep your body parts and life when dealing with the sharks domain.
1. Understand how sharks think. (the shallow water hunting species.)
These guys are mostly eating machines and they dont have the best eye sight. they like to test potential food by giving it a nibble, unfortunately that nibble has rows of really sharp teeth. Sometimes a bite just cant be avoided.
Sharks know there are lots of fish in shallow water. They also know that there is a lot of food to be scavenged in shallow water.
There WILL BE sharks in water between calf high and deeper, sometimes they will even skim the few inches of the beach. Not going in and staying ankle deep are the safest options but by far the least fun.
2. Attractants
Sharks will respond to splashing, thrashing, kicking, flailing etc etc, basically 90% of humans water activities will be a beacon for sharks because they recognize that as potential food about to die or in severe distress.
Sharks like shiny things. like most predatory marine animals they will chomp down anything that reflects light including very pale human skin which glows from reflecting sunlight under shallow water. Why? Because prey tend to have shiny sides. Get a tan!
This part sounds weird but hey, I know it works. Food. anything greasy or anything that will leave residue that you haven't thoroughly washed off of you after a nice lunch will bring in predators. they have an amazing sense of smell which moves us to the next part..
Blood. The single most uncontrollably delicious smell to a shark. Don't submerge any wound of any kind in the water, they can detect a single drop of blood for miles.
Ladies, if Aunt Flo is in town, just say no to getting in the water even if your'e using feminine products.
Remember, the sea is not your home and you are only a visitor there.
