Take epiphany in the sense of a striking revelation or understanding of something...and not a religious context in this example.
However.. While writing a rather hot post a moment ago and ending it with how the 'silent majority' is silent because they're killing themselves to make ends meet and support the benefit class pushing change..something hit me like an ACME Safe on a clear day in a cartoon.
*WHAMMY!*
One of the very first things we learned in college geography, and then learned again in humanities, and yet again in anthropology due to it's real core importance for the formation of society was the order of things, and how they happened, to allow man to form society, then achieve early 'enlightenment' with intellectual pursuits. Quite the jump from hunter-gatherer, eh? So what is the CORE thing that *MUST* happen in a society for advancement to occur (or revert, if it vanishes)?
When a society or group is too busy supplying food to the population, to meet basic needs.....advancement is stagnant. There are no free hands or minds to craft procedures that take base ingredients and make alloy metals for stronger tools, leading to more complex ones, and eventually automation on even basic levels. If all are busy making ends meet, and barely at that, then there is no time to be poetic, or think great things, aside from 'did I leave the torch lit before I left the hut this morning??'.
When production exceeds demand, luxury begins for time to pursue something other than simply producing the food. THEN...people start indulging curiosities and exploring ideas ...which leads right to major change, societies forming or REFORMING very quickly, and progress actually having a turning point to note in historical context. In fact, history has more than one of those watershed periods across short time frames, to look back.
---------------
This is a moment where history VERY VERY MUCH matters in the present moment, and everything above is real critical to understand as accepted as well as proven in academics and policy making.
---------------
The modern day equivalent, and what hit me like that fictional safe was how those very basic, very low level fundamentals of societies HAVE been manipulated, very successfully, to elevate and give luxury of time to ONE political side of our population, while the other lost it in something approaching a zero-sum game for winners and losers.
There are, without question, more people on benefits today by both numbers and per capita % than anytime in this nation's history. We've been watching those records being broken, upward, repeatedly for at least 3-4 years now. Who is more likely to be found among that group, generally speaking and for policy planning reasons, as it IS taken by leaders?
Is the Right and Conservative mindset more likely to be eating bon bons and planning the next protest rally, or is it the Left?
Which side is more likely to take unemployment and rededicate themselves to being out finding a job until one HAS BEEN found? Oh..and removing themselves from the politically active, in most cases?
------
If I wanted to load the system for politically active and most visible as Conservatives? Then I would apply great pressure to the benefits programs and keep the people on them jumping hard to stay busy, and not have all that free time to go raise hell.
If..on the other hand, I wanted a very active and very visible political left, what better set up? Conservatives will continue to work, because work ethic isn't something worn like a cheap shirt. It's internal to one's character ..or its not.
End result? Back to Geography... The luxury of time by the release from the requirements of work to live.....brings dramatic, short term changes. Yes indeed. How that works out long term sure varies by historic example. If you can actually influence which side is getting time and which is losing it in a partisan sense?
You have total political manipulation as a reality. (and people call Obama stupid.... sheesh)
