The Marines are looking for a few good.....ships?
Erm.. Um... Huh? Our nation had a World Class (in fact, the only global blue water Navy left at the time) Navy in 2008. Now, after 6 years of having the majority of our Navy tied to piers and parked to rust...we can't even muster the transport for our Marines?
So.... when will that be for more ships? Are more in the pipeline for production? Are some going to rejoin the fleet from mothballs? Hmm

Hey, wait a minute.. We have THIRTY ships to carry them.. We have 10 Carrier Battle Groups (on paper now, anyway). That makes 3 amphib carriers to a battle group, if all 10 were at Sea at once!
Oh..wait.. I get it.. This isn't about using Marines as a PART of a much larger and safe element. It's about .. yes... I see there... 100-120 putting ashore alone, in what we'd presume is less than friendly land ..to what? What is it Marines can or SHOULD be doing in such a small group in a foreign nation in crisis??? Aside from Embassy security (and Amphib ships are not required for Embassy security) I'm at something of a loss to figure what we NEED 38 ships for.....except a vision of more loss, more cost and more American adventurism around the world.
Hey... Lets make sure we have what we need, but lets not go planning from the outset to structure it so we're ALWAYS on the ragged edge of total military calamity! Carrier Battle Groups are GOOD things because they can pound the very life out of anything within 100 miles of a coast line. It is due to that awesome power that they have rarely HAD to display it. Marines in 100-120 man expedition parties will *NEED* to show force just to stay alive, I'd imagine. Our 'prestige' sure won't do it for them anymore.

Faced with a shortage of U.S. Navy ships, the Marine Corps is exploring a plan to deploy its forces aboard foreign vessels to ensure they can respond quickly to global crises around Europe and western Africa.
The initiative is a stopgap way to deploy Marines aboard ships overseas until more American vessels are available, said Brig. Gen. Norman Cooling, deputy commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa.

The units would be designed for limited operations and not major amphibious assaults. A ground force of about 100 to 120 Marines would be deployed along with three or four Ospreys, which fly like airplanes but can take off and land like helicopters.
The U.S. Navy has 30 amphibious ships but says it needs 38 to fulfill war fighting requirements. It won't reach that level until 2028 because of budget constraints, according to the Navy.
Critics say the Navy has allowed its amphibious capabilities to decline.
