Big fish, huh?
So how many people saw JAWS? (skip the sequels... I'll save ya the time. The sharks always die, with at least one human you came to care about. heh) How many knew that was based around a real set of events?
The Shark Attacks That Were the Inspiration for Jaws (for those who are curious, there are the facts behind the loose movie story)
It is amazing to me, how many folks are shocked to learn sharks share the waters, often yards from swimmers who never know the giants are in the same immediate area. Usually, they coexist without conflict, as if sharks somehow know, eating one of those funny two legged things will mean being hunted and killed by God (from a fish's perspective).
Now Lifeguards in Southern California are using a new tool in the effort to keep swimmers safe! Drone the Sharks!
I'll bet they are somewhat careful about how visible those monitors are to the public. After all...you don't hear the lifeguards going nuts over a dozen apex predators just outside the swim area. They know it isn't just normal, it is common.

It truly takes someone working around or near sharks every day to consider a 5-6 foot predator 'non-aggressive and normal' in any circumstance. If the waters could somehow be turned clear to see through, what would swimmers think, to see the beasts swimming back and forth..another 25-50 yards beyond where a swimmer floats? I imagine we'd hear Americans demanding the shark nets Australia uses (and needs). It would be silly overkill here ...but indeed. The beasties are out there!
Nice idea to use drones overhead as spotters, eh?

SURFSIDE BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A new drone that is being utilized by Southland lifeguards reveals a chilling look at how many sharks are just feet from the shoreline at one beach.
“This morning, we launched it and 10 minutes later, we knew there were 10 to 12 sharks all in the Surfside [Beach] area,” Chief Joe Bailey, a Seal Beach lifeguard, said.

“If we get bigger sharks or we get sharks that are aggressive, we’re actually going to close the water. But right now, we have sharks that are 5- to 6-feet long, non-aggressive, acting like normal sharks, feeding on bottom fish, doing exactly what we would expect them to do,” he said. “That’s why we have it posted just to let people know that they are there.”
