This is a quickie made to walk through the process of a youtube, specifically. Hopefully, this helps ease some of the difficulties with posting video. For those not familiar with keyboard shortcuts and in reference to the video:
CTRL-A = Select All CTRL-C = Copy CTRL-V = Paste at cursor

@wrabbit2000, thanks for the tips. I am one of those people that have not had any computer training; I've learned everything I know from just experimenting; it can get frustrating when you don't know what you're doing. I've gotten so mad at the computer at times, I just want to scream! I think I've done pretty well to get to the point I'm at on my own, but there's so much I wish I knew how to do, so, thanks for the tips. I keep learning new things all the time.
Now that I've learned most of the important things about the computer, I need to learn how to use my Smart Phone!
This..will NOT work. The first half of the URL hasn't changed and looks like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UUYjd2rjsE ...and JUST like the original one that DOES work. The SECOND half:
&index=4&list=PLDu83GkhEBIVKWg-WH-oS9WoNbeVG4IBr is added by Youtube for their use and will break our video player. Nothing will show up, pasting this line in.
So...to make this a little more visual, in ANY long youtube address? You want one piece of it, and the trash you delete afterward will ALWAYS start with a &:
This is a trick to use for people who have the basic posting of a video down cold, and are annoyed by LONG videos where people have to sit and wait forever to find the spot YOU want to highlight.
Annoying isn't it?? Some videos can be an hour long and you only really care to share a few seconds of that for a particular point supported or disproved.
What to do??
Well... Lets start with the URL I used up there:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UUYjd2rjsE That is the original video code to play in our editor ..and again, here is how it looks in normal play.
----but lets say within that video, you are only sharing it to highlight the cave dwellings used as background. Which is more effective to share it?
"Just play the video to around the 30 second part and look at the background! See?"
or...
"Press play, and the first 5 seconds are the cave dwellings to look for!"
How did I do that? I just added a few characters at the end ...(grin)
This:
https://youtu.be/1UUYjd2rjsE
Becomes this:
https://youtu.be/1UUYjd2rjsE?t=28s
...and as you can see, the second video starts precisely at the 28 second mark, leaving a reader to decide if they even care to see the rest, or the 27 seconds leading up to the scene of interest.
?t=28s
The above is all that was added to achieve that result.
There is also something important to note on ALL of this, and this applies at Hernando's Hideaway, AboveTopSecret, or almost any other forum site on the internet.
If something I've done above or which you see done in another post doesn't make sense? Hit "Quote", then press the BBCode tab in the editor window (for our site's commands).
That should show, character for character, what the other person typed to get the result they did. It's a quick way to learn advanced forum posting methods without having to find where its explained or even ask someone. Just duplicate what you see, then tweak until you break it (you'll know what not to do) or until your version looks right ...then next time, you can make your version without having to look.

Thanks for that added bonus Never knew how that was done....now I do
As far as the 'codes' go, that's how I learned a lot was from TOS and looking at someone's post (quote) to see how it was done Actually, I've learned most of what I know from TOS
Of course, I'm still learning

ETA: Love your video tutorial, very nicely done!! Was that made with your new gift?
Yup! That was made with Camtasia 8. The college made it available as a gift to all full and part time staff/faculty, which includes me..so.. It can do a lot more, but I'm learning. It is quite a program!
@wrabbit2000, Nice tutorial there Wrabbit. I haven't messed around much with the spacing toolbar much because I saw no need to for whatever I have posted, but now I know. As you say, it's the little things. They can be roadblocks sometimes, eh?
But I have a glitch with your tutorial. It is permanently muted so I was visual only. No sound.
I would also like to see how to post a pic using the toolbar as I can never get that to work, even after following the directions Sen posted and always just end up using the "Add Attachment" button. Which works, but I have to save the picture to my computer rather than just copying and pasting.
I see that your one off those who prefer keystrokes over mouse commands too. I always got annoyed looks whenever I asked why. Is there a more technical reasoning behind it? Just curious.
Beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
Adding minutes to the seconds doesn't require much more, actually.
Lets take this documentary about the U.S.S. Nimitz (perhaps the finest warship ever devised, but I digress... :) )
So..lets say you aren't interested in all the fluff and, perhaps, you know someone who appeared in the video? Maybe..someone driving a pickup truck on the dock with the giant hull numbers illuminated in the background. Problem is..it isn't at 0-9 seconds, but 12 minutes, 04 seconds. Here is what you add to the end:
I see that your one off those who prefer keystrokes over mouse commands too. I always got annoyed looks whenever I asked why. Is there a more technical reasoning behind it? Just curious.
I hadn't thought about it that way, but depending on what you're asking? Yes on both possible questions. The technical reason in the video was to get the keyboard shortcut on the screen and visual, to reinforce what was happening in the video. (I have some better ideas about how to do that for future ones too..these were a bit haphazard for not having an outline to follow, myself)
In terms of my personal use of keyboard shortcuts over mouse clicks, when possible? I hadn't been like that for most of my life. It really picked up when I started working for Disabled Services on campus. After that first semester and having to help students learn key commands I didn't even know myself, I realized something. The blind students weren't simply maintaining speed with the class in exercises. They were FASTER, more accurate and more confident in what they were doing, despite the obvious disparity between the blind and the normal students.
It didn't take long of forcing myself to keep my right hand off that damn mouse unless I NEEDED the cursor for something, to find I was also gaining speed I could never have achieved using a mouse. That carried across all parts of MS Office, and has begun to simply carry into everything I do on a computer. (It's amazing to find how much of the MS Office command set is borrowed or sets the standard...whichever direction that originally went..to be a universal set in many ways)
The seconds lost in simply reaching over, grabbing the mouse, doing something with it, and moving back to the keyboard doesn't seem like much....but compare the level of work after an hours time, without having to do it. It's downright amazing at first....then you'll wonder how you worked any other way!
** BTW.. That goes for movement of the cursor within a document and line positions too, surprisingly enough. Someone may have to see that done a couple times to believe it, too. However, you can become significantly faster in moving around a document for cursor positions by keyboard than by just clicking a mouse to the spot (Then again, my students also listen to English spoken at 5-10x normal speed and understand it as naturally as a casual conversation). :)
