But that program and several other post-Sept. 11 counter-terror measures look likely to be revived in a matter of days. With no other options, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, in an about-face, reluctantly embraced a House-passed bill that would extend the anti-terror provisions, while also remaking the bulk phone collections program.

You know, McConnel is turning out to be a real piece of garbage. What did Kentucky do to us?? At least Reid just stopped things from being done. This stooge helps things happen, and that is worse!

So... Defeat ripped from the jaws of victory? :face-palm:

Paul has a mixed record himself, as I seem to recall. However...I have to say, his words ring true there. This is precisely the sort of thing a Revolutionary war was fought over.

Personal Disclosure: There are far more than this issue that is worth triggering a revolution over IMO, and all I can say to my American friends is what are you waiting for?

Use your 2nd amendment rights to enforce the change you want to see, as it seems speaking up and out under the protections of the 1st amendment has done very little to make your nation a better place when everything is controlled by a lobbyist funded/fueled and organized poorly veiled robber barron petrochemical military medical industrial corporatocracy!

What are the odds that in a couple of years we will be hearing about Federal scandals where the NSA continued to illegal monitor the USA public in some fashion after the removal of the patriot act?

If it was unconstitutional then why isn't George Bush, 2001- 2015 Congress et all. arrested and charged with treason?

The constitutionality of this issue has not yet been resolved at all and basically TPTB got away with it for over a decade!

Two edge sword this: One the one hand they were doing that crap before a law was ever written saying it was OK.... I know for we did that kinda stuff all over the world back in the 70s only not as thorough; no cell phones ... One the other hand if they don't get what they want standby for a great opportunity for a major FALASE FLAG just so they can say, "See I told you so" ... if I were a pessimistic sub commander I would be telling the crew to standby for a crash dive. Didn't take near as long as a week, I see.

The new law would require telephone companies, such as Verizon Communications Inc and AT&T Inc, to collect and store telephone "metadata" the same way that they do now for billing purposes.

But instead of routinely feeding U.S. intelligence agencies such data, the companies would be required to turn it over only in response to a government request approved by the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

So now, telecoms are no longer required to store metadata and hand it over to the government any more. Now they are only required to store metadata and hand it over to the government.

I fear for my country when this is what passes for "progress".

“The findings will be used to document both the prevalence and variation in the ideological content of posts from members of each movement,” the grant continued. “In addition, we will assess the value of these messages in the social status of the individual posting the message and the function of radical messages in the larger on-line identity of participants in extremist communities generally.”

They are really digging in and looking for any and all information on those they deem a threat. And they are out and out targeting Americans, not Jihadis.

I am so disgusted and ashamed at what American has become.

They are mining IP addresses off of these "right wing websites" somehow. That's the way to geolocate. So DoJ, rather than outright breaking the law itself, is enlisting the private sector to do what the government cannot do legally.

Ain't that sumpin'?
