It is amazing, what they are coming up with in the world today. Its more amazing to consider what we can now do with electronics smaller than a pack of cigarettes.
THAT is a computer! Well...it will be soon, anyway. This is a prototype, apparently, and an idea that just went viral on Kickstarter.
Okay, I do declare that this is getting absurd. I'm still playing starving student, eating baloney on hand, while people with a better mousetrap raise over $800,000 in less than a week! Hey! What the heck can HH people noodle up for a concept to throw on Kickstarter?? There must be something viable and workable that one of us has had as a thought needing opportunity? Just ONE?!
Anyway..back to their idea here. It IS realistic, as the Rasberry Pi and Pi II are VERY real, very common among the comp hobby market and similar to what an old electronics breadboard was to kids in my generation. A handy tool to have around, but not THAT special... (Raspberry Pi II at $35)
Still..they make a good point here too. At $35-$75, and the going rate for a Rasberry Pi II, depending on whether you want a power supply and case with it .. a $9 comp IS still a game changer by the dramatic change in price point. $35 is a tool I'll feel a bit to see go out or be ruined somehow. $9 is a tool I can toss out and grab another off a small stack without thinking much about it, for experimenting with interesting ideas.

Cheap in price does not necessarily mean cheap in value or ability. That is plenty of power to run a full server install of Linux, with Debian being as good a choice as any within the big supported distributions. That should run almost anything outside 3-Dimensional graphics of pretty much any kind (Video or the math behind it for the wee processor there would be a bit much) Outside of that? Hey..there isn't much I'd need the size and portability for that the specs there couldn't handle with ease. (Put a web or IP cam next to that, and a mini-USB flash with 64 gig and you'd have yourself a very low profile and self contained video system, good for days of recording time. Trespassers? Rodents? Anything like that? ....as just one of the many uses I can think of real quick!
Now here is a sincere cheers to a bright new future, on at least this end of life and society. It is amazing, how much negative can be going on and in so many ways both here and elsewhere around the world. Yet, the very positive and constructive just keeps plugging right along too, at or around the same time, and if nothing else? At least giving a touch of balance to news almost too similar these days to bother reading, for so much of it.

a Linux-based mini-PC priced at just $9, is receiving an overwhelming response on Kickstarter. Launched last Thursday with a funding goal of $50,000, it has chalked up more than 16,000 backers who have shelled out upwards of $815,000. The project still has 25 days to go.
The tiny open source device, made by Next Thing Co., has been dubbed the "Raspberry Pi killer."

Measuring just 1.5 x 2.3 inches, C.H.I.P. comes with 512 MB of DDR3 RAM and a 1-GHz processor. It offers WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Its built-in composite output port lets it work with any size screen, old or new. Users can add a VGA or HDMI adapter for a few dollars more.
C.H.I.P. runs Debian and can be used with LibreOffice to create and work with office documents.
