Disclaimer: This thread contains information regarding tentacle technology and may be disturbing and confronting and may make some of you blush and LOL or conversely snort is disgust and quickly leave the thread!
Please keep the obvious pornographic uses of tentacles and any such metaphors to yourselves! [Cough Cough Adult Members who know me can personal message me for a single artistic picture link. Don't try it if I don't know you ok! Cough Cough!]
Won't somebody think of Cthulhu errrhmm the Crown of Thorns erhhm the CORAL! THINK OF THE DAMN CORAL OK!
Explanation: Please come in my fine fellow HH members and welcome to this thread I promise it wont get to creepy ...
Muhahahahahaha! Come this way ....
Before I link any tentacle technology I would like to invoke Cthulhu defender of the deep ...
[Music] Hey There Cthulhu [youtube]
OK now on with the tentacle technology ...
[Educational] Soft Robotic Tentacle [youtube]
The videp is short at only 12 seconds long so please rewatch it several times so as to not miss anything.
Tentacle in video lifts itself up and over a horseshoe barrier and then loops around it!
This open source tentacle will haunt your dreams! [techcrunch.com]
Please view the source article linked above for more information and to also watch the 2min long youtube video of that 3d printed tentacle in action.
So we have bionic tentacles ... now all we need is some way of protecting them ... I know lets add some armor ...

Ok so we can make a soft underwater robot like a squid or octopus or something slightly more armored like a firm robotic seahorse or starfish or even a hard crab version using the tentacles as internal muscles.
[Music] If I Were A Deep One! [youtube]
Now If I was a Deep One in the form of a remotely controlled Adopt-A-Robot starfish I could try to defend the great barrier reefs coral from the dreadedGame of Thrones Crown of Thorns starfish! [Make it an online game!]
Here is the enemy ... Crown of Thorns Starfish [wiki]
And this is our friend that we would be trying to save ... Coral [wiki]
Ok, That is the basic very rough idea and I hope my fellow HH members can help me flesh out these bare bones [ironic as tentacles don't have bones] that I have presented in various ways from secure underwater comms for remote control [sonar?], to which organizations I should seek out to propose this concept to etc.
Is this a good idea or am I inviting skynet terminator day like death upon us all due to unintended consequences?
Is this practical and doable and is there a market for adopt a eco-rescue robot?
Would this self fund itself or would it rely on Government assistance grants?
Would this violate any laws?
Personal Disclosure: I got the idea for adopt a robot from The Adopt a Bot Project by Brian Marshall [thedesigninspiration.com] whose art is amazing!
The pink tentacle that invites my fellow members into the thread can be found following info at this link We've got plenty of finger tentacles [geyserofawesome.com] , again amazing artwork!
Finally I would like to close out this opening post with a female cover of the same song that opened this opening post ...
Hey There Cthulhu - Female Cover [youtube]
Praise be to Cthulhu, Defender of the Deep, Protector of the Coral Reefs!

In the underground world of robotic tentacle makers, there are two rules: 1) don’t talk about underground tentacle-making and 2) don’t talk about underground tentacle-making. Both of those rules have been shattered by Matthew Borgatti, a robotics designer who has created a life-like, 3D-printed tentacle that flails around quite disturbingly using Arduino boards and a set of mini air compressors.

The meaning of the word biomimicry is being devalued and inflated, to the point that any technology or design with the vaguest resemblance to something in the natural world tends to have the word unthinkingly applied to it. PR people in the automotive and architectural fields are now particularly fond of the word. So it's refreshing to be able to report on some research that has taken a detailed look at a natural phenomenon, the armor of a seahorse, and thought about how it might be applied in the field of robotics. The researchers think a similar structure of sliding plates could be used to improve robot arms used for underwater exploration and bomb disposal.
