This is a story of freedom and mercy shown, in the end. However, I bring it up here to show how extreme some states have been, and without the pardon of a Governor in this case? How extreme some still are.
You read it right. Marijuana offenses. Nothing more. I've described cases like this before, to have ignorant fools tell me I was either lying or misinformed..and nothing like this actually happens or is still ongoing. Well.. Surprise...yeah, it has and yeah it still is. As terrible as it may be....this is still happening to entirely too many people.
Nothing violent. Nothing predatory. Yet...without a Governor with a political reason to need to look good just now ...he'd have been left to rot and die in a cell. Over a plant. Nothing more. Just a plant.

This gentleman represented our only Life WITHOUT parole case over non-violent marijuana related offenses ...but he damn sure isn't the only one losing large %'s of their life, or still under system supervision...as a result of a plant.
This madness has to stop, for how many lives are harmed far more by the laws and response to those laws...than the plant itself. Whatever the downsides? Fighting it has been much worse.
A Missouri man sentenced to life without parole for marijuana-related offenses is eligible for parole Friday after Gov. Jay Nixon commuted his sentence.

Jeff Mizanskey had two previous felony convictions for marijuana-related offenses when he was sentenced in 1996 to life without parole for a third felony offense. At the time, the law allowed a sentence of life without parole for people with three felony drug convictions and has since been changed.
Police said Mizanskey conspired to sell 6 pounds of pot to a dealer connected to Mexican drug cartels. Nixon, a Democrat, said in a statement that none of the offenses were violent or involved selling to children.

Mizanskey's previous felonies were for possession and sale of marijuana in 1984 and possession in 1991. Family members, lawmakers and advocates for marijuana legalization have campaigned for the Missouri man's freedom. Mizanskey was the only person in Missouri serving a life sentence without any possibility for parole for nonviolent marijuana-related offenses.
