Let me start off by saying I have never been a cat person. I have one dog which is outside in a fence, and 2 inside dogs who I couldn't bribe to be outside. I had a cat show up on my back deck a year ago, and she was probably 6 months old. I never messed with her or really gave her the time of day.
My 2 year old son plays outside, and when he does this cat always comes around. He seems to like her and she's gentle with him so I just let it be.
Today my son and I were outside near my back deck playing and I noticed the cat sitting on the wooden railing of my deck. I heard a growl/bark and see a pitbull charging us growling and barking. I grabbed my son and attemped to make it to the door to get him inside. As im doing this, the little female cat flies off the porch at the pit completely fearless of this dog. I got my son inside, grabbed my firearm and went outside to see the cat still chasing the pit down the street.
I called animal control and they picked up 2 pits, one being the one who charged me. I never saw the second one at the time but they said they were together further down the neighborhood. They said both pits were ate up with bite marks around their snouts indicating they have been fought. When all was said and done, I sat down on my deck and rubbed the cat for about an hour. This cat is now named kit kat, and she is going to be well taken care of and part of my family now. I'm still amazed at how fearless this tiny female cat was running down a big male pit without hesitation.
That's a Fantastic story,,, Good For Kit Kat. I have a question, you say this cat just showed up and as taken to your family and really your son and hasn't left. My question is this, was there a passing in your family of a strong female in the last year or two?
This is just my thoughts on this, being Chinese and a Buddhist and also I do Worship My Ancestors, That could very possibly the soul of that child.
Most children in My Belief,,,( Not necessarily Yours ) are ancestors being reborn into the world and they can return as a family pet if the mother is barren or losses her child and the Ancestor feels a need to return to accomplish something.
Now that just my way of thinking and listening to your description of how this cat as accepted YOU so easily, I don't find this common among cats.
Maybe another member who knows cats better will chime in.
Cats are -to me- strange animals, and I don't pretend to understand them.
Most cats are just 'pets', but every once in a while I've noticed cats that just seem odd...other-worldly, if you will. Maybe your beliefs are spot-on, Guohua. It would certainly explain the odd-ball cats I've seen.....you get the sense that they can communicate with you telepathically or read your mind, almost!
It's awesome that YOUR cat is so protective of your son, Luke...and that you 'rewarded' her for an hour!
What a great cat and how wonderful that she looked out for your son! I'm so glad that you and your son are safe.
I had my cat for 17 years and he loved my hubby and daughter, but I was his person. One incident that I have always remembered was back when I'd been married for about a year or so, I needed to change a light bulb, but am too short and was not able to reach the light. Hubby had just gotten home and was in our room changing out of his work clothes, so I decided that I could do it myself. So, I climbed up on the back of the couch and could sort of just barely reach...if I stretched up on my toes. I am ridiculously clumsy, I always have been. I was this time, too. I was up on my toes and lost my balance and went flying. I came down and landed and cracked my head on the wood board along the back of the couch hard. I knocked myself out for a minute and hubby heard me land and came running out of the bedroom, saw me knocked out, and immediately rushed me to the hospital. It was a concussion, but not serious.
The Dr. told hubby that I could sleep, but that he needed to wake me up every two hours. I didn't care, I just wanted to sleep. I went and crawled into bed and fell asleep and the next thing I knew, my cat was biting my eyebrow and gently pulling at it. It had only been about an hour, so I went back to sleep. An hour later my husband came in to wake me up and check on me and walked in to see the cat biting my eyebrow and pulling on it again. He checked that I was okay and I went back to sleep. 59 minutes later I was woken back up by the cat biting my eyebrow again. This happened every hour with only 1 to 3 minutes +/- to being exact about an hour. The whole rest of the evening and all throughout the night until I got up the next morning.
I have no idea why or how he knew that I needed to be woken up, but he decided that I needed to wake up once an hour that day. It was the sole only time that ever happened like that, too. He would wake me up by biting my eyebrow tons of other times, but usually because he decided he was hungry or because it was time to wake up and pet him. No other time on an hourly schedule, though, which is why it was so memorable, still, almost 17 years later.
It amazes me how our animals can come to be such vital parts of our families. How they look out for us and protect us at times and put their own well being on the line for us, in your son's case.
Thanks so much for telling us about it, it brought back a good memory for me that I was glad that I was able to share.
