A magnitude 5.4 quake struck Nevada on Friday, close to the town of Helene, northeast of Las Vegas, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It said the quake, which was quite shallow at a depth of only 12 miles (19.4 km), was close to the border withUtah. The epicenter was located some 90 miles northeast (145 km) from Las Vegas.
A swarm of hundreds of earthquakes in Nevada has intensified recently, prompting experts to warn people to be ready in case larger ones hit.
Starting in July, some 750 earthquakes, mostly magnitude 2.0 to 3.0, have struck a corner of the Nevada desert near the Oregon border, according to several reports. Scientists believe groundwater is slowly percolating along the faults and building up pressure, making movement on the faults much easier, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Remembering maps Muzzy & Puterman drew up for that corner once, and geological info from...Olivine, i think? That area is sort of an on again/off again seismic area. Basically the Long Valley of NV. It'll rumble, go quiet, rumble, go quiet, REALLY rumble, go quiet, and so forth.
As far as the faults of the US goes, there's so many of them all over the place, and pressure distributes itself all the time. Kinetic energy moves faults just like it would anything else. It may take time for it to translate from one area to another, but suffice it to say, it'll all shift at some point.

I watch the USGS quake info constantly throughout the day, looking for patterns I guess. One thing I've noticed is all the small quakes going from the Aleutian islands all the way up into the interior, then all up and down the California coast-and the seem to be getting more frequent.
That got me to thinking about the Nepal quake, and how long it might take all the energy it released to reach the west coast. There seems to be a lot of settling going on.
Hey Mystic,,,, What's Up,,,, Have you visited this thread yet link Could use your input!
@guohua, I was using my phone earlier and couldn't get your link to work. Sorry, but I fell asleep in the recliner. I just woke up and came to my desktop to see what thread you were talking about.
My brain is all fuzzy now, but I promise I'll post my beliefs when I am more coherent; this is a reply that requires me being alert. My beliefs are complex and will take me some time to post.
