I do believe they are serious about the whole South China Sea thing, and playing with them this way might end poorly.
Have they lost their minds in warmongering idiocy? China isn't some 3rd world nation that can't even shoot down a Western plane without 10 strokes of luck on a 4 leaf clover (Okay Serbia got a lucky shot..it happens..rarely..heh). China is a nation that has been putting all efforts into full ahead for over a decade now to match and specifically defeat Western systems. Our systems...and this is just flicking their ear or tweaking their nose. China is a fully vested and mature Nuclear power, as well. Our side acts as if we're superior, everyone else knows it in the end, and this is just a sort of dance.
I don't believe the Chinese see it the same way.

I'd guess they'll try and avoid splashing a major international media presence, if they decide to respond to the buzz flights or closer ship passes ..but China doesn't suffer short term thinking syndrome. If there is ONE thing they do NOT have a problem with, it would be getting stuck in short term thinking. So...they would have thought this out before they began, and this stage was a predictable outcome on the road of world response. So...it isn't a question of how China reacts..but what have they intentionally planned ahead of time, as the answer to what was expected?
I think our team is a bit out of their league with this kind of game playing. Kerry is sure not up to par, IMO.
The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.
Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CNN's Erin Burnett Wednesday night that the confrontation indicates there is "absolutely" a risk of the U.S. and China going to war sometime in the future.

CNN was aboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, and quickly learned that the Chinese are themselves displeased by the U.S. pushback.
"This is the Chinese navy ... This is the Chinese navy ... Please go away ... to avoid misunderstanding," a voice in English crackled through the radio of the aircraft in which CNN was present.
