My fiance and I picked up a couple copies of Far Cry 4 a few days ago and have been playing it with a total playtime so far of 17 hours.
Overall, it's kind of similar to the open world of Just Cause 2 if you played that where you can roam around and get into trouble (or make some) if you chose. We were joking last night about how we couldn't run 30 yards without landing next to some sort of "incident" that needed intervention. The hunting is fun in it and the story is pretty good but that's to be expected from Ubisoft really.
One of the misleading things that Ubisoft did was the grappling hook stuff. It is not like in Just Cause 2. The points where you can grapple are fixed and in that sense, it's not that "open" of an open world. Co-op mode is extremely buggy.

One of the misleading things that Ubisoft did was the grappling hook stuff. It is not like in Just Cause 2. The points where you can grapple are fixed and in that sense, it's not that "open" of an open world. Co-op mode is extremely buggy.
Here's the list of bugs with co-op mode:
- Unshared map--basically, anything you do in co-op mode only affects the host's map. We spent 6 hours playing together and clearing the map only to find that all the work we did on my map didn't port over to my fiance's. Likewise you can't do the story missions together.
- Map loading--The host has to load into the map and then, after invite, gets the additional treat of the map reloading yet again to allow the 2nd player to join. If that player exits, the map reloads again. Co-op is map reloading hell.
- Desync issues--Basically, something happens and the guest player begins having issues that actually affect playing. Little things like being unable to heal or see enemies...
- Severe graphical issues--Ubisoft was extremely lazy on its co-op portion for Far Cry 4 and, aside from the first two, this one is the most obvious sign of absolute inexcusable laziness. Weird visual effects to major graphics clipping as in missing graphics turn what is a pretty game into something real ugly.
- Murder--If you and your partner in play decide to ride a chopper together, make sure you get in at the same time or else whoever rides in the backseat is a goner. Unless they crouch. Highly advise crouching.
Just a side note on the severe graphical issues. Riding as a passenger in a vehicle gives a very ugly graphical effect that we call "warp drive" but instead of being pretty stars, it's the entire terrain. It's quite remarkably bad. To really tell you just how bad it is to view, my cat is one of those keyboard cats. You know the type that likes to cross in front of the monitor not giving a hoot about what you're doing or what's on the monitor. Well, last night, kitty decided to do his usual cross before the monitor routine while I was a passenger but this time, what was going on via the monitor caught his eye. He literally froze, unmoving, staring at the monitor for a few minutes (we were going a distance) and then bolted in sheer terror.
Yeah, have to agree with kitty in that the passenger mode graphics are pretty overwhelmingly bad. All that aside, it's a good game overall but shame on Ubisoft for blowing it utterly once again in the co-op. They should be embarrassed about this stuff in all seriousness. It's like they literally slapped a bit of code in just to claim it's co-op. In hindsight view, would we buy it again? Mixed on that because the claims did not match the product and neither my fiance or I are very fond of when companies do that even if other aspects of the game are fun.
