Perhaps its just the times and sensitivity to patterns these days, but I wondered when reading this .... could TPTB (the people with the kind of money to be selling and trading things at this level) be moving long term wealth into liquidity for a reason? Perhaps short term needs for a lot of cash and easy to spend assets?

That is a lot of art moving out the door, for a whole lot of dough.
Perhaps no pattern there at all, and just a quirky time for many to happen to sell in across short period....or who knows?
I've wondered at times? If TSHTF in a real world, serious way? Just what would the little warning signs coming immediately before the public saw it happening, look like?
The art market is on such a tear even the insiders are scratching their heads. Since New York’s spring sales started last week, at least $2.1 billion of art has been sold at Christie’s and Sotheby’s, with the top 10 lots accounting for almost $800 million.
Christie’s said collectors from 35 countries were bidding at its May 11 sale while Sotheby’s said clients from more than 40 countries were out in force the next evening. They jockeyed for Impressionist, modern, postwar and contemporary art.
