Here recently I was watching the news and noticed the name Ben Carson come up as one having officially declared for the Presidency. I seem to recall others mentioning him before as well, so I got a bit interested and decided to see who he is.
Very few people who we'd ever WANT to see in politics actually wind up choosing to go into it, or are anything like we imagined they might be, if they do (Fred Thompson comes to mind in the last category).
This guy may just be the exception, but I'm not 100% sold yet. Still...he's the most promising man I've seen in a few election cycles, after we admit Ron Paul simply never ..ever.. had a real chance by math alone. Maybe Carson has the same political fate, but I'm starting to hope..not.
What makes him different? Lets start with a basic Bio...
Basic Bio Information
Born: Detroit, Michigan - Sept, 1951 (Hey! We found a REAL American!...and I'll throw carrots at anyone who even suggests the Canadian border was nearby so..maybe..heh..just no!)
According to Biography.com he was raised poor, inner city and by a single mom in a broken home, from about 8yrs old onward. A real person with a real background! (hey, this gets better and better on these little things, and we're just starting. He actually grew up with a real and typical American life)
It also sounds like a background he doesn't quite paint himself as being a nice and perfect person in...or says nothing at all. Again, refreshing.
His mother all but grounded him from everything distracting, to focus on improving himself, and the above was the result. Great Mom..and come to think of Moms..has Obama ever even mentioned his or is that another thing we never got to know much about about she passed away? Carson seems to have been formed and shaped by his mother. A good thing in this case, too.
The MOST impressive thing? He's HIGHLY intelligent, and very accomplished as a highly skilled professional in his own natural field. In short, he's a self made and REAL success...not a P.R. spun and adviser run persona of a success. THAT is something rather new, I must say.

That about covers his 30+ year career in high level pediatric neurosurgery surgery. Okay, now color me a bit impressed. Perot was the last one we really saw who had independent and true personal success outside politics and outside marrying into it. It's not even business for Carson, while it would have had plenty of executive decision experience. Another two +'s.
Wiki's basic bio-box has the stats as:
Add to the above bio, he developed prostate cancer, assisted in his own treatment and decisions, then managed to overcome it early with surgery.
Although, he may be best known by many as the guy who dis'ed Obama while speaking just a few feet away. (laugh) ..I have to admit, he gets points for having courage with this.

Both Ben and his brother experienced difficulty in school. Ben fell to the bottom of his class, and became the object of ridicule by his classmates. He developed a violent and uncontrollable temper, and was known to attack other children at the slightest provocation. The poverty he lived in and the difficult times he experienced in school seem to exacerbate the anger and rage.
It also sounds like a background he doesn't quite paint himself as being a nice and perfect person in...or says nothing at all. Again, refreshing.
Within a year, Ben Carson was amazing his teachers and classmates with his improvement. The children's books he read while he was confined to quarters now had relevancy in school. He was able to recall facts and examples from the books and relate them to what he was learning in school. In 5th grade, Ben astonished everyone by identifying rock samples his teacher had brought to school.
As he recalled several years later, he began to realize that he wasn't stupid. Within a year he was at the top of his class, and the hunger for knowledge had taken hold of him.

After graduating from Yale in 1973, Carson enrolled in the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan, choosing to become a neurosurgeon rather than a psychologist. In 1975, he married Lacrena "Candy" Rustin whom he met at Yale. Carson earned his medical degree, and the young couple moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he became a resident at Johns Hopkins University in 1977. His excellent eye-hand coordination and three-dimensional reasoning skills made him a superior surgeon early on. By 1982, he was chief resident in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins.
. . .
In 1987, Carson attracted international attention by performing a surgery to separate two 7-month-old craniopagus twins from Germany.
. . .
In 1994, Carson and his team went to South Africa to separate the Makwaeba twins.
. . .
In 1997, Carson and his team went to Zambia in South Central Africa to separate infant boys Luka and Joseph Banda.
. . .
In 2003, Ben Carson faced what was perhaps his biggest challenge: separating adult conjoined twins. Ladan and Laleh Bijani were Iranian girls who were joined at the head. For 29 years, they had literally lived together in every conceivable way.
