Hmmm... This is an interesting one. I'm trying to hold back comment, because I am truly curious as to the general thinking on US posturing here.
As the article goes on to note, the USS Fort Worth has been in the area. . . . .

The U.S. military is considering using aircraft and Navy ships to directly contest Chinese territorial claims to a chain of rapidly expanding artificial islands, U.S. officials said, in a move that would raise the stakes in a regional showdown over who controls disputed waters in the South China Sea.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter has asked his staff to look at options that include flying Navy surveillance aircraft over the islands and sending U.S. naval ships to within 12 nautical miles of reefs that have been built up and claimed by the Chinese in an area known as the Spratly Islands.

The Carl Vinson just came into the South China Sea, and that may be coincidental as it is coming off 5th Middle East deployment. The Washington is 'off the Japanese Coast' in sea trials, and presumably without it's group. I don't know what the Vinson still has with her, although a Battle Group as I saw recently isn't quite what I'd recalled one being anyway...but if a littoral ships are meant to send a message ...ahem...in THEIR little pond? I think we're coming up short. (sorry..couldn't help it..couldn't hold back. It's kinda silly here)
I think what needs to stop is running our diplomatic policy like it's a big board game and a spectator sport as well! Umm.. This kinda thing wasn't always detailed on the front pages, when intended to be a high level message between world powers. This isn't the 60's, and Washington is capable of just calling Beijing to deliver a message. I think we even have an ambassador there somewhere!

Yeah...right...and just how are we doing that?

Yeah, that was really showing them a thing or two! Putting pressure right where it matters, I tell ya! Less than a year ago too. Thats....like...so last year tho. Right? We're not supposed to think of time like we used to, or that 7 months ago is anything like recent (unless it is to the benefit of the news makers).
Obama proposes nuclear cooperation between USA and China
I'm sure that is showing a clear message ..of, well, something or other?
The USS Fort Worth is on the job tho! ... kinda lonely out there perhaps, and not much of a message, but it's there! We're serious about China too! Oh, my yes. They can't just go claiming the South China Sea like this! After all, when Russia took Crimea? We...umm..Sanctioned them! As the article also mentions...when ISIS just outright laid claim to whole sections of Iraq and Syria to form a new state? Well...We launched an air campaign as we got real mad!
Umm.. I really hate to rain on the USS Forth Worth's parade or pride here...as I am sure they are a fine little ship. They're probably very good at their focused and shallow water missions, too! They are in what China is calling their own waters now tho ...and China has spent 20 years developing hyper-sonic missiles to take out US Aircraft Carriers, through a full Aegis screen throwing everything at them.
If the Chinese bother to notice the little ship by itself and get annoyed enough to take..what? A sanction or two as the price to pay? They could ...cause us to regret a message so easily smacked away or broken.
I can't help but say it kinda reminds me of the Persian messenger in Sparta. d_hJZfC8t2FrknI9TjHM Unfair match-up didn't even cross the guy's mind...and it ended rather poorly for him. It would be like Russia sending a few Frigates and a Destroyer to the Gulf of Mexico to send a message. (Umm.. We'd understand they meant to pollute our waters with their wreckage, if they got an attitude there...hehe)
Officials said there was now growing momentum within the Pentagon and the White House for taking concrete steps in order to send Beijing a signal that the recent buildup in the Spratlys went too far and needed to stop.

In recent months, the White House has sought to increase pressure on Beijing to halt construction on the islands through diplomatic channels, as well as by calling out the Chinese publicly in recent press briefings and government reports.
